FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason softball team will travel to Saint Joseph's this weekend for their first road conference series.
A LOOK AT THE PATRIOTS
Mason comes off their midweek match-up with Morgan State splitting the two matches with the Bears.
In game one, four Patriots went 2-for-4 at the plate in an offensive jam. Those four included senior
Taylor Dadig, junior
Rachel Warrens, redshirt sophomore
Nicole Bechtel, and sophomore
Marlaina Bozek. After forcing a decisive eighth inning, with the bases loaded, Warrens knocks one out of the park earning the walk off grand slam in the 5-1 win.
In game two, the Patriots struggled offensively despite Dadig and freshman
Charlotte Montgomery going 2-for 03 at the plate. Morgan State earned their first two runs early to take the 2-0 lead over Mason. The Patriots were able to score one late, but the Bears scored one more to come away with the 3-1 win.
Graduate student pitcher
Cheyenne Van Pelt earned the win in the first game after pitching the first five innings and then coming back to pitch in the eighth. Freshman
Jordan Anderson came in to pitch the sixth and seventh innings in the first game. Freshman
Madi Williams earned the start in the second game before she was relieved by sophomore
Carly Cooper in the seventh.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
Saint Joseph's, 2022 record: 4-13, 0-3 Atlantic 10
Saint Joseph's ended their 2021 season with an overall record of 26-20, 19-3 in the conference. En route to a conference championship title, the Hawks dropped their first two games of the tournament, one to Fordham and the other to conference champions George Washington.
Saint Joseph's is led by junior Jessica Gaughen. Gaughen currently leads the team in batting average, recording a 0.294 mark so far this season. The infielder has tallied 10 hits, three doubles, and three RBI's in 34 at-bats.
From the bullpen, the Hawks are led by sophomore Emily Siler, who has appeared in 10 games thus far in the 2022 season, tallying a record of 2-6. Siler has tallied an ERA of 4.88 after 48 innings pitched, giving up 49 hits, 31 runs, 27 walks, 11 doubles, and five home runs.
Saint Joseph's holds the slight advantage over Mason, leading the all-time series 8-7, with the last meeting between the two teams occurring in the 2021 season where Mason swept the Hawks in Fairfax 10-6 and 8-0.
