Fairfax, Va. -- The Georgetown Hoyas women's lacrosse team jumped out to an early lead to defeat the George Mason Patriots, 21-5, in the final non-conference match before Atlantic 10 play.
The Hoyas (4-3) rattled off four straight goals in the first five minutes to take the early lead and scored eight goals in the first to distance themselves from Mason with an 8-2 lead after the first period. Mason drops to 1-6 heading into Atlantic 10 conference play. The Hoyas improved to 4-3.
After an early 4-0 lead by Georgetown, Mason responded with two of the next three goals.
Shannon Tuozzo notched the first goal at 9:48 and
Lauren Distad responded with a goal two minutes later to get the Patriots to within three, 5-2. The Hoyas made another 4-0 run to increase its lead to 8-2 after the first period.
Lauren Distad scored her second goal of the game and
Olivia Heaton with just under five minutes left in the second period for Mason, but Georgetown scored five goals in the period to take a 13-4 lead into the break.
Mason started the second half with a break-away goal by
Ioanna Mantzouratos as
Olivia O'Brien hit her in stride with a long pass for the assist. That would mark the final Patriot goal on the night as the Hoyas finished the match with eight straight goals.
Mason was led by
Lauren Distad with two goals and
Shannon Tuozzo with one goal and one assist.
Izzy Allen led Mason with three ground balls.
Shannon Tuozzo had four of the 10 Patriots draw controls.
Georgetown was led by Ali Diamond, Lily Tardif, and Kylie Hazen with three goals apiece. The Hoyas goalkeeper Emily Gaven had sixe saves in the win. The Patriots Meghan Deegan finished with 13 saves.
Georgetown out-shot Mason 40-15.
Mason will open Atlantic 10 play with two road games slated for next weekend. The Patriots will play at VCU on Friday, Mar. 25 then continue south to play Davidson on Sunday, Mar. 27.
