Mason Closes Out Home Stand With Morgan State

FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason softball team will host to Morgan State on Mar. 16 inside George Mason Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
 
A LOOK AT THE PATRIOTS
Mason comes off their conference opening weekend with an overall record of 11-6, 3-0 in the conference after sweeping St. Bonaventure. Both the Patriot's records are good for first place in the Atlantic 10 conference.
 
On Sunday, sophomore Marlaina Bozek led the offensive momentum for the Patriots going 3-for-3 at the plate, one of which was an RBI. Bozek also scored one of Mason's four runs in the game. Senior Taylor Dadig tallied two hits and one run in the game. Senior EJ Bankson and junior Rachel Warrens recorded one hit in the game, Warren scoring two of the Patriot's four runs.

On Monday, the Patriots showed a strong hitting performance, recording 15 hits between the two games. In the first game of the day, both junior Maddy Myers and junior Haley Taormina went 2-for-3 at the plate. Bankson added another hit to her series total as well as redshirt sophomore Nicole Bechtel. Taormina, Bankson, and Bechtel all recorded in RBI in the 4-1 win.
 
In game two on Monday, Bankson and Bozek each had two hits with both Dadig and Warrens adding one more to their weekend totals. The shortstop Warrens collected two RBI's, whereas Bankson, Bozek, and Dadig recorded one each.
 
Sophomore pitcher Carly Cooper pitched two complete games for the Patriots over the weekend series against the Bonnies. Cooper, 7-1 on the mound this season, recorded 13 strikeouts in 14 innings. In 48 total at-bats, Cooper only gave up eight hits.
 

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

Morgan State, 2022 record: 6-7, 0-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference

Morgan State end their 2021 season with an overall record of 24-17, 14-5 in the conference. Able to garner the championship title in the MEAC, the Bears were upended by No. 1 Oklahoma 19-0 and Texas A&M 10-3 in the NCAA Norman Regional.

Morgan State is led by graduate student Tayven Rousseau. Rousseau currently leads the team in batting average, recording a 0.389 mark so far this season. The second baseman has tallied 14 hits, three doubles, two home runs, and seven RBI's in 36 at-bats.
 
From the bullpen, the Bears are led by sophomore Anaya Hunte, who has appeared in seven games thus far in the 2022 season, recording a record of 4-2. Hunte has tallied an ERA of 1.88 after 28.2 innings pitched, giving up 19 hits, eight runs, 10 walks, two doubles, and four home runs.
 
Mason holds the advantage over Morgan State, leading the all-time series 9-1, with the last meeting between the two teams occurring in the 2021 season when the teams split the doubleheader, allowing the Bears their first win over the Patriots.
