FAIRFAX, Va. – Graduate student starter
Danny Hosley turned in a dominant performance, and the Patriots scored all of their runs in the first three innings in a 9-3 win over Coppin State on Tuesday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
Hosley allowed just two singles and struck out eight over seven innings to earn his second win of the season.
Mason (7-8) took the early lead against Coppin State (4-11) junior starter Johan Freudenburg in the bottom of the first.
Junior first baseman
South Trimble led off with a walk, freshman shortstop
Carsen Pracht was hit by a pitch and freshman right fielder
Brett Ahalt singled to load the bases.
Freshman catcher
Connor Dykstra then ran the count full and forced in a run with a walk to put the Patriots in front. A batter later, Pracht scored when Hosley grounded into a double play to make it a 2-0 game.
The Patriots have scored the first run in four of their last five games.
In the second inning, graduate student left fielder
Kamron Smith led off with a single and moved to third on a single by sophomore center fielder
Jordan Smith. Sophomore second baseman
Brett Stallings drove in a run with a ground out to increase the lead to 3-0.
The Patriots sent 12 batters to the plate in the home half of the third and scored six runs on five hits against Freudenburg and Eagles sophomore reliever Luke Baker to make the score 9-0.
Senior third baseman
Daniel Brooks and
Kamron Smith each plated two runs with a single, while Trimble and Ahalt also drove in a run in the inning.
The Patriots stole nine bases in the game.
Freshman right-hander
Jackson Baird took over for Hosley and retired the Eagles in order in the eighth inning.
Coppin State scored three runs on two hits and two walks in the top on the ninth against senior
Matthew Henson.
For the Patriots, Hosley (2-1) allowed just two singles and struck out eight without a walk in his longest outing of the season, with 7.0 scoreless innings to earn the win. Baird and Henson each pitched an inning.
For the Eagles, Freudenburg (0-1) surrendered five runs on five hits in 2.0 innings and took the loss. Baker allowed four runs on three hits in one inning of work. Freshman Marcos Herrand tossed three scoreless, while sophomore John Neeld and classmate Rashad Ruff each pitched one scoreless inning.
Kamron Smith went 2-for-4 with two RBI and scored a run. Ahalt was 2-for-3 with a walk, drove in a run and scored a run. Brooks drove in a pair of runs in the game for Mason.
The Patriots conclude their homestand against Georgetown on Wednesday, with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
