Patriots Split Doubleheader With Quinnipiac

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team split a doubleheader on Friday against Quinnipiac at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Va.
 
Mason (6-8, 0-0 A-10) dropped the first game to the Bobcats (3-8, 0-0 MAAC) by the final score of 6-5.  The Patriots took the night cap, 8-4.
 
GAME ONE
 
The Patriots took the lead in the first inning against Quinnipiac junior starter Brandyn Garcia.
 
Junior left fielder South Trimble led off with a single, and wasted no time stealing both second and third.  Graduate student third baseman Danny Hosley was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners.
 
Mason executed a double steal, with Trimble rumbling home for his third stolen base of inning, to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.
 
The Patriots have scored the first run in five of their last seven games.
 
Mason put together a two-out rally in the second inning after a ground out and a strikeout.
 
Sophomore second baseman Brett Stallings and freshman right fielder Alex Knapp each beat out infield singles, and Trimble was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
 
Freshman shortstop Carsen Pracht stepped to the plate and cleared the bases with a double to right field to extend the Patriots lead to 4-0.
 
The Bobcats would score six unanswered runs in the game.
 
Mason senior starter Jared Lyons retired the first 10 batters he faced in the game before Bobcats senior Kyle Maves doubled with one out in the top of the fourth.
 
With two outs in the inning, junior catcher Danny Melnick knocked in Maves with a single through the left side to make it a 4-1 game. 
 
In the fifth, Quinnipiac sophomore designated hitter Sebastian Mueller hit a solo home run to cut the Mason advantage to 4-2.
 
In the sixth, Maves led off with a single and junior Anthony Donofrio followed with a single.  A fielder's choice by Melnick moved the runners into scoring position, and Maves stole home for the Bobcats third run of the game.
Melnick then stole second, went to third on an error and scored on an error to tie the game, 4-4.
 
With one out in the seventh, sophomore shortstop Julian Uejima singled, stole two bases and scored on a wild pitch to give the Bobcats their first lead at 5-4.  Maves knocked in another run in the inning with a sacrifice fly to make the score 6-4.
 
The Patriots plated a run in the home half of the ninth.  Freshman catcher Connor Dykstra led off with a walk and crossed the plate before the tag on when freshman center fielder Brett Ahalt, who was picked off of first for the final out of the game.
 
Lyons (2-1) allowed six runs, five earned, on seven hits in 7.0 innings and took the loss.  Senior Matthew Henson pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
 
Pracht went 1-for-4 with his second double of the season and drove in three runs.  Stallings and Knapp each finished 1-for-3 with a run scored.
 
GAME TWO
 
The Bobcats took the lead in the first inning against Mason sophomore starter Ryan Peterson
 
Maves led off with a walk and went to third on a single by sophomore catcher Keegan O'Connor.  Melnick then drove in a run with a ground out to first, with Maves racing home for a 1-0 lead.
 
The Patriots responded in the bottom of the third against Quinnipiac junior starter Kevin Seitter.
 
Graduate student left fielder Kamron Smith led off with a single and went to second on an error.  Stallings followed with a single and then stole second to put a pair of runners in scoring position.
 
After a strikeout, Trimble laced a two-run single to left field to put the Patriots in front, 2-1.
 
The Bobcats evened the score in the top of the fourth inning, with sophomore shortstop Matt DeRose plating a run with a single to make it 2-2.
 
In the home half of the fifth, Stallings led off with a single, stole second and went to third on a single by Trimble.  Pracht grounded into a fielder's choice, with Stallings crossing the plate with the go-ahead run to give the Patriots a 3-2 edge.
 
Mason sent 11 batters to the plate and scored five runs on five hits and three hit batsmen in the bottom of the sixth to pad the lead to 8-2.
 
Freshman right fielder Yogie Hartigan drove in two runs with a single, Hosley had a RBI-single, Ahalt forced in a run with a walk, and Dykstra forced in another when he was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game.
 
Quinnipiac scored two runs in the ninth on a two-run single by sophomore left fielder Jared Zimbardo for the 8-4 final score.
 
For the Patriots, Peterson (1-0) allowed two runs, one earned, on eight hits and struck out five in 6.0 innings to earn his first win as a Patriot.  Senior Mason Posey gave up two runs on two hits and struck out four in 3.0 innings to pick up his third save of the season.
 
Stallings went 3-for-3 and scored two runs.  Smith was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.  Trimble finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
 
The Patriots and Bobcats are scheduled to play the third game of the series on Sunday, with the first pitch at 1 p.m.
