GREENVILLE, S.C. - The George Mason softball team (3-5) dropped their two contests on Saturday in Greenville, S.C. at the Greenville Showdown.
The Patriots first fell in a 10-5 loss the Paladins of Furman before falling 8-7 in a true comeback from behind effort to the Presbyterian Blue Hose.
Game 1: Mason (3-4) vs. Furman (5-7)
In the first contest, the Patriots put up a much better offensive showing than the game in the night prior against the Paladins.
Furman started the game strong in the bottom of the second inning with home run out to center that scored three runs for the Paladins.
Mason was finally able to get the offensive momentum going in the top of the fourth inning earning three runs off a single to shortstop from freshman
Hayley Shifflett and a single to center field from junior
Haley Taormina.
The offensive showing in the top of the inning was not enough as the Patriots gave up six runs off an RBI single, a walk, and a grand slam.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Patriots were able to add two more runs to their column off an RBI double from junior
Rachel Warrens.
The Patriots held Furman scoreless until the last batter of the sixth inning, giving up a run off a wild pitch from the graduate transfer
Cheyenne Van Pelt.
Sophomore
Carly Cooper earned the start and recorded the loss in the game. Cooper gave up seven hits, nine runs, three walks and recorded eight errors in 3.1 innings pitched. Freshman
Madi Williams came in the fourth inning to relieve Cooper before walking three batters in 0.1 innings pitched. Van Pelt closed the game, giving up two hits, one run, three walks, and recorded one error in 2.1 innings pitched.
Game 2: Mason (3-5) vs. Presbyterian (7-3)
In the second contest, in a true come back from behind effort, the Patriots come within one run with two outs in the top of the seventh inning before falling 8-7 to Presbyterian.
Presbyterian started the game strong scoring four runs in just the three innings. The Blue Hose earned their first run off an RBI single out to right field, their second off an RBI ground out, and the third off an RBI single to the right side. The Patriots allowed to more runs in the bottom of the third, advancing the Blue Hose lead 5-0.
Mason held Presbyterian scoreless until giving up two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning off a home run out to left field.
The Patriots got the offensive momentum going in the top of the sixth inning, scoring five runs. Sophomore
Marlaina Bozek earned the first run of the inning off a single up the middle. The second run was scored off a fly out to center field, scoring a run for the Patriots. Freshman
Hayley Shifflett hit a three-run home run to end the inning. This was Shifflett's first career home run in the Green and Gold.
Mason continued the offensive momentum in the top of the seventh inning, scoring two more runs off an RBI single from freshman
Jordan Anderson and a double from Bozek.
Freshman
Alexandra Anderson earned the start in tonight's loss to the Blue Hose. Anderson gave up eight hits and five runs in 2.2 innings pitched.
Cheyenne Van Pelt relieved Anderson, giving up two hits and two runs in 2.1 innings pitched.
Carly Cooper relieved Van Pelt to pitch the final inning of the game.
The Patriots final game of the tournament was canceled due to inclement weather in the Greenville area.
