SPARTANBURG, S.C. –
The George Mason baseball team dropped its final game at the OneSpartanburg, Inc. Baseball Classic to USC Upstate, 2-1, when the Spartans scored the winning run in bottom of the ninth at Harley Park.

Patriots graduate student starting pitcher Danny Hosley pitched a complete game and struck out 11 Spartan batters in the loss.

In the three games over the weekend, Mason pitchers combined to allow just five total runs against Presbyterian, Boston College and USC Upstate.

In the second game of the day of Saturday, Mason (3-4) took the early lead in the top of the first inning against USC Upstate (6-1) freshman starter Lukas Touma.

Junior first baseman South Trimble led off with a double down the left field line, and he moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman shortstop Carsen Pracht.  Hosley then grounded out to second, with Trimble coasting home to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.

Hosley kept the Spartans off the scoreboard for the first six innings.  He allowed a leadoff single in the first inning and didn't give up another hit over the next five frames.  Hosley struck out the side in the fifth and fanned the first two batters in the sixth inning for five in a row.

Touma also kept the Patriots in check and turned the game over to the USC Upstate bullpen in the fourth.  Junior Derek Sivec entered the game and proceeded to toss five scoreless innings, allowing just one single and two total baserunners.

The Patriots were held to just two hits and five total baserunners in the game.

In the home half of the ninth, Spartans senior Devin Buckner led off with a single and freshman Noah Sullivan was hit by a pitch.  Sophomore Noah Rabon singled in Buckner from second with the winning run for the 2-1 walk-off victory.

For the Patriots, Hosley (0-1) allowed two runs on four hits.  He struck out 11 with just one walk and threw 91 pitches.

For the Spartans, Touma allowed one run on one hit in 3.0 innings in a no-decision.  Sivec surrendered just one hit and struck out six in 5.0 innings.  Senior Kevin Davis (1-1) pitched a clean ninth to earn the win.

Trimble went 1-for-3 with a walk and scored a run, freshman catcher Connor Dykstra was 1-for-2 and also reached base when he was hit by a pitch.

The Patriots host Navy in the home opener on Wednesday, with the first pitch scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Va.
