CLINTON, S.C. – George Mason freshman
Chad Gartland earned his first career win, and senior
Mason Posey notched his first career save, to lead the Patriots to a 4-2 victory over Presbyterian in the OneSpartanburg, Inc. Baseball Classic on Friday at PC Baseball Complex in Clinton, S.C.
Gartland made his first collegiate start, struck out the side in the second and cruised through six innings. He allowed just five baserunners in the game before the Patriots made a pitching change with two on and one out in the seventh.
Presbyterian (2-4) sophomore starter Duncan Howard also had a quality start. He retired the first 10 Patriots batters of the game before the Mason (2-3) broke through in the top of the fourth.
With one out in the inning, freshman shortstop
Carsen Pracht used his speed to beat out an infield single. Graduate student third baseman
Danny Hosley followed with a triple into the right field corner, with Pracht coasting home to put the Patriots in front 1-0.
Graduate student designated hitter
Kamron Smith then knocked in Hosley with a single to center to make it a 2-0 game.
In the top of the seventh, senior first baseman
Scott Morgan led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and went to third on a groundout. With two outs, a throwing error allowed Morgan to score to increase the lead to 3-0.
The Blue Hose loaded the bases and scored two runs in the home half of the seventh, scoring a run on a fielder's choice ground out and another on a fielding error to make it a one-run game, 3-2.
The Patriots added an insurance run in the top of the eighth against Blue Hose junior reliever Logan Ymker. Pracht drew a one-out walk and raced around to score on a double by Hosley to pad the advantage to 4-2.
Senior right-hander
Mason Posey took over on the mound in the eighth and tossed two scoreless frames to pick up his first collegiate save.
For the Patriots, Gartland (1-0) earned his first NCAA victory in his first career start. He allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits and struck out nine with just one walk in 6.1 innings. Senior
Matthew Henson face two batters in the seventh inning. Posey allowed just an infield single and struck out three batters in his outing.
For the Blue Hose, Howard (0-1) allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits and struck out six without a walk in 6.2 innings. Ymker gave up one run on one hit in 1.1 innings. Junior William Farrar retired three batters in the ninth.
At the plate, Hosley went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple, two RBI and a run scored. Pracht was 1-for-3 with a walk, stole three bases and scored two runs. Smith finished 1-for-4 and drove in a run.
Mason concludes the weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday at Cleveland S. Harley Park in Spartanburg, S.C. The Patriots face Boston College in the first game with the first pitch scheduled for 10 a.m., and then play host USC Upstate with the first pitch slated for 5 p.m.
