RICHMOND, Va. –  The George Mason women's swimming and diving team fell to Duquesne, 171.5-127.5, while the men's team concluded the first day of competition of their two-day dual against Davidson at the Richmond Duals.
The Mason women's team won seven events against the Dukes, with junior
Abigail Murtaugh and sophomore
Ali Tyler each winning two individual events.
Graduate student
Madison Nalls won the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.87), with sophomore
Emma DeJong third (1:55.30). Nalls also placed second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:12.71), with freshman
Anna Beth Blankenship fifth in the event (5:17.11).
Sophomore
Anka Whelan took the top spot in the 100-yard backstroke (56.60) and was second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.94).
The Patriots went one-two in the 200-yard butterfly with Murtaugh first (2:05.25) and sophomore
Emma Burke second (2:11.23). Murtaugh also won the 100-yard butterfly (57.22) with freshman
Peyton Brehmer third (57.84).
Tyler touched the wall first in the 50-yard freestyle by one-tenth of a second (23.59). Brehmer placed third in the event (24.20). Tyler also won the 200-yard IM (2:05.92), with Whelan fourth (2:09.57).
The Patriots took three of the top four spots in the 100-yard freestyle with Tyler second (52.00), sophomore
Shannon Judge third (53.11) and DeJong fourth (53.17).
Freshman
Gracie Sweeney placed fourth in the 1650-yard freestyle (17:43.89) and sophomore
Sydney Branch was seventh (18:21.60).
In the 200-yard medley relay, the team freshman
Ainsley Toews, Tyler, Judge and Brehmer took second (1:46.89) and the combination of senior
Emily Lewantowicz, freshman
Brooke Nelson, Murtaugh and Whelan placed fourth (1:48.96).
Brehmer, DeJong, Judge and Nalls swam to victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:28.97). Freshman
Angelina Zeidan, Lewantowicz, Toews and Blankenship placed fourth (3:40.07).
Toews made the podium with a third-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.80).
Nelson placed fourth in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.72) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:26.12).
Sophomore
Emma McDonald placed fifth in the three-meter diving event (216.10) and sixth in the one-meter event (197.40). Freshman
Maddie Hersh placed eighth in both the three-meter (175.55) and the one-meter (146.45).
On the men's side, the Patriots won seven events against Davidson on day one.
Sophomore
Zane Roberts won the 50-yard freestyle (21.25) with freshman
Joshua Hochard third (21.52). Roberts also swam to a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (46.23) with Hochard fourth (46.96).
Freshman
Tate Anderson won the 200-yard backstroke (1:50.48). Anderson was third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:40.33) and junior
Anthony Nguyen was fourth (1:44.56).
The Patriots went one-two in the 200-yard IM with Nguyen touching the wall first (1:56.52) and Lucht second (1:56.90).
The Patriots took the top four spots in the 200-yard breaststroke with sophomore
Tyler Lentine first (2:04.98), freshman
Thomas Chapman second (2:09.29), senior
Sammy Lucht third (2:10.07) and sophomore
Nathaniel Powell fourth (2:10.83).
Sophomore
Zachary Kopel placed third in the 1650-yard freestyle (16:35.92) and freshman
Max Fermayer was fourth (16:38.45).
In the 200-yard medley relay, the group of senior
Josh Fletcher, sophomore
Alexander Franklin, Lucht and Roberts took the top spot (1:32.57). The team of freshmen
Aoun Al-Hiari and
Jett Lee, sophomore
Tyler Lentine and Hochard placed third (1:33.76).
Al-Hiari placed third in the 200-yard butterfly (1:56.99), while classmate
Sam Rivas placed fourth in the event (1:58.41).
In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the combination of Anderson, Franklin, Hochard and Fletcher placed first (3:05.10). Freshman Daniel Schwabauer, sophomore
Logan Skiles, Lee and Nguyen finished third (3:08.11).
The Patriots are back in action on Saturday, with the men's team continuing their dual meet against Davidson, while the Mason women's team will also face Davidson at 9:30 a.m. in Richmond, Va.
