BALTIMORE – The George Mason University women's tennis team earned a third-place finish and the consolation championship at the Loyola Fed Cup this past weekend.
 
The event format was based on the International Fed Cup, the premier team competition in women's tennis. Duos from Loyola (Md.), Howard, Rider and the Patriots combined to play in pods featuring one doubles match and a pair of singles matches. The team with the best record in each pod would move on in the bracket.

"I am very proud of how our team competed this weekend," said Coach Steve Curtis. "We fought through adversities and injuries and still managed to go an impressive 11-1 on Sunday."

The team of Paige La, Taylor Garcia, and Jenin Alasadi finished in third place. The trio won its first-round match, 2-1, against Rider's team of Andrea Sydow and Avery Oppenheim. La and Garcia teamed up to defeat the Bronc's team, 6-1, in doubles action. La earned the second point with a 6-0, 6-2 singles win against Sydow. Alasadi battled Oppenheim into a tiebreaker set but eventually lost 10-8.
 
In the quarterfinals Mason's top team defeated the Loyola team of Jocelyn Assael and Lauren Manwiller, 2-1. After dropping a close doubles match (7-5), La and Garcia each won a singles match to advance to the semi-finals.
 
Facing another Loyola team, the Patriots didn't have the same result, dropping the match, 2-1. The Greyhounds earned the doubles point before La event the match at 1-1 with a singles win against Jessica Bodewes, 6-4, 6-3. Loyola's Emi Shivkumar defeated Garcia in a tiebreaker set, 6-7 (0), 6-1, (10-8), to move into the finals.
 
The team earned Southeast Third place with a 3-0 sweep against Loyola's Tracey and Richiez.
 
La finished 6-1 overall, winning all three singles and three doubles matches.
 
Mason's team of Maitree Root, Avleen Waraich, and Jenin Alasadi finished 7-5 en route to earning the consolation championship. After dropping its first-round match, the team won three straight matches.

The Mason group defeated two straight Loyola teams by a 2-1 score before sweeping Howard in the consolation final. The doubles team of Root/Alasadi defeated Hana Elsherif and Emnet Simunyola, 6-0, in doubles. Alasadi easily won her singles point, 6-2, 6-1. Root defeated Elsherif, 3-6, 6-2, (10-3). 

Mason's team of Jackie Nannery, Emily Wirt, and Francesca Trella finished 2-2. The team of Lauren Splett and Ashley Fitz-Patrick also finished level at 2-2.

The Patriots will travel to ITA Regionals this weekend, Oct. 20-24, in Blacksburg, Va.
