Mason Takes Down Edinboro in MAC Dual

Fairfax, Va. – The Patriots wrestling team picked up its second straight MAC dual victory today, as George Mason (8-5, 2-3 MAC) defeated Edinboro (2-7, 1-4) by a score of 22-12 inside the RAC gym. Mason took seven of the ten bouts against the Scots on Alumni Day.
 
Mason jumped out to a 6-0 lead after decisions in the first two matches. At 125, Ben Monn edged Edinboro's Christopher Merlo, 2-0 and Michael Rapuano earned at 9-3 decision against Cameron Soda.
 
Edinboro got on the board with a fall at 141 to level the score, 6-6.
 
Alex Madrigal 10-5 lead going into the third and won in a 12-9 decision against the Scots Ryan Burgos at 149 pounds. Avery Bassett (157), Kyle Davis (184) and Austin Stith (285) each earned a decision for the Patriots.
 
Freshman Logan Messer continues his dominance in his rookie season, earning a major decision against Edinboro's Joey Arnold. The 174-pounder is 21-5 this season, including 2-1 in the MAC.

Patriots coachesAt the intermission, former Mason coaches Mike Moyer and Brian Shaffer were honored with the 'hammer'. Moyer coached for 10 seasons and is a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Class of 2022. Moyer advanced 27 wrestlers to the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. Three of those wrestlers went on to earn All-America honors. Shaffer, a two-time Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year, led George Mason to three conference titles in 10 seasons and coached more than 25 NCAA qualifiers. Shaffer coached at Battlefield High School where his teams won four straight district titles, a regional title and finished 5th in the state in 2015.

George Mason will remain at home to compete in a MAC tri-meet with SIUE and Clarion on Saturday, Feb. 5 beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the RAC against SIUE. The Patriots will compete against Clarion at 7:30 p.m.
