Patriots Begin Season at Potomac Relay Invitational Friday

2021-22 SCHEDULE | MEN'S ROSTER | WOMEN'S ROSTER
 
FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's and women's swimming and diving teams are set to open the 2021-22 campaign, competing in the Potomac Relay Invitational on Friday at 4 p.m. at Frailey Pool in Washington, D.C.
 
Mason will face local rivals American, Georgetown and Howard.
 
Teams will compete in the 200-yard freestyle relay, 200-yard medley relay, 500-yard freestyle relay, 800-yard freestyle relay and 1000-yard freestyle relay.  The event will also feature butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke 3X100 relays, and IM 4X100 relay.
 
Last season, the Mason men's team won five of nine events at the Potomac Relay Invitational to claim first place with 100 points.  Georgetown finished second (96), Howard third (72) and American was fourth (68).
 
The Mason women's team won three of nine events and finished second with 90 points at last year's event.  American took the top spot (96), with Georgetown third (86) and Howard fourth (52).
 
On the women's side, Jacquee Clabeaux, Emily Lewantowicz, Laura Hodge and Ashton Gasper won the 500-yard freestyle relay (4:43.63). 
 
Megan Cummins and Hodge combined to take the top spot in the 1000-yard freestyle relay (10:35.27). 
 
Lauren Ashton, Hannah Milikich and Clabeaux won the 3X100 backstroke relay (2:54.97).
 
The Patriots took second in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:40.02), 200-yard medley relay (1:47.40), 400-yard medley relay (4:07.36) and 800-yard freestyle relay (7:53.65).
 
On the men's side, Nick Ashton, Drake Moretz, Will Rastatter and Christopher Stankiewicz won the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:25.36).  Attila Kiss, Ashton, Moretz and Rastatter took the top spot in the 500-yard freestyle relay (4:11.18).
 
Mason also won the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:03.54), 200-yard medley relay (1:34.18) and 400-yard medley relay (3:37.00).
 
The Patriots' men's team begins the season with one graduate student, five seniors, five juniors and seven sophomores returning from last year's roster.  The returners will be joined by 12 newcomers for the 2021-22 season.
 
The Mason women's team begins the campaign with nine seniors, five juniors and one sophomore returning from last season.  They will be joined by 14 freshmen for the 2021-22 campaign.

ABOUT THE PATRIOTS
 
The Mason men's team has 18 returners and 12 newcomers on the roster under head coach Peter Ward.
 
Returning for the Patriots are graduate student Wallace Watkins, along with seniors Nick Ashton, Jared Bergan, Timothy McKinley, Will Rastatter and Sam Westmont.  Mason has five juniors (Thomas Chapman, Josh Fletcher, Jackson Knouse, Sammy Lucht and Walter Turlington), and seven sophomores (Sorab Aman, Graham Boyle, Ian Castegnaro, Indigo Flynch, Anthony Nguyen, Dylan Nguyen, and Miles West).
 
The Patriots added 12 freshman (Kevin Dinkel, Joe Durocher, Gabriel Fouts, Alexander Franklin, Zachary Kopel, Dane Kudlacik, Justin Lee, Nicholas Maranto, Nathaniel Powell, Zane Roberts, William Ross III, and Christopher Schuering).
 
The Mason women's team has 15 returners and 14 newcomers on the roster.
 
The Patriots are led by nine seniors (Jacquee Clabeaux, Megan Cummins, Laura Hodge, Ana Kuzemka, Ariana Lewis, Mia McKinley, Sophie McKinley, Annie McNenny and Hannah Milikich).  Back for the 2021-22 season are five juniors (Lauren Ashton, Haley Butcher, Emily Lewantowicz, Megan Mastropaolo and Leah Riley), along with sophomore Abigail Murtaugh.
 
The Mason women's team added 14 freshmen (Daphne Bernal, Sydney Branch, Korina Davis, Emma DeJong, Katherine Diatchenko, Hope Jaynes, Shannon Judge, Ally Kiger, Emma McDonald, Calli McEvoy, Michaela Teachey, Kylie Thompson, Ali Tyler and Anna Whelan).

The Patriots schedule includes the Potomac Relay Invitational (Sept. 24), at Delaware (Oct. 9), Richmond Duals (Oct. 22-23), A-10 Classic (Oct. 30-31), Patriot Invitational (Nov. 18-20), Old Dominion (Jan. 29) and the Atlantic 10 Championships (Feb. 16-20).
