Fairfax, Va. – The George Mason golf program released its 2021-22 golf schedule, as announced by head coach
Greg Pieczynski.
The Patriots' 12-tournament schedule includes five tournaments during the Fall 2021 season.
"We are always trying to improve our schedule and make it nationally competitive," said Pieczynski. "Playing events hosted by the best teams in our conference as well as receiving invites from nationally ranked programs like Penn State, West Virginia, North Carolina State has elevated our program. The fall season alone has us competing against teams from all five Power conferences."
"We also scheduled invitationals in Puerto Rico and South Florida in the spring which will be great experiences for our student-athletes and set high expectations of our future team members."
The season opens September 13 at the VCU Shootout, the fifth time the Patriots have attended the tournament. The two-day 54-hole tournament will be played at the Country Club of Virginia on the Tuckahoe Creek course in Richmond, Va. CCV just hosted the PGA TOUR Champions event and completed a $6.5 Million renovation. The field consists of VCU, Maryland, Old Dominion, Radford, William & Mary, Richmond, James Madison, Rhode Island, Georgetown, and St. Bonaventure.
The Green and Gold will head to North Carolina the following week to play at the River Run Collegiate, hosted by conference foe Davidson. The 54-hole tournament will be played at the River Run Country Club.
In October, the Patriots will play in three tournaments, two hosted by Power 5 opponents, and the Phoenix Invitational, hosted by Elon. ACC national power North Carolina State, who qualified for NCAA Finals in June, plays host to the Wolfpack Intercollegiate (Oct. 16-17) and the other is by Big 12 Conference contender, West Virginia.
The WVU Mountaineer Invitational (Oct. 4-5) will be played at the Pete Dye Golf Club on October 4-5. The host course is named for the legendary golf designer and ranks #46 on Golf Digest's ranking of America's 100 Greatest Courses. Mason Golf played in this event last spring so will have some experience heading into this year's edition as it boasts a very strong field including mostly of Power 5 teams. The field is Arkansas, Cincinnati, Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern, Missouri, Mississippi State, Penn State, Rutgers, Utah, Washington State, and host West Virginia.
The Sixth Annual Phoenix Invitational takes place on October 11-12 at Alamance Country Club, hosted by Elon. The Donald Ross designed course has been renovated by Robert Cupp to bring back its original character.
The final fall event is NC State's Wolfpack Intercollegiate October 16-17 at Lonnie Pool Golf Course. Host North Carolina State ended the season ranked #10 by Golfstat and will have another strong team. The tournament boasts other strong teams such as Campbell, Virginia Tech, Cincinnati, East Carolina, Eastern Michigan, Elon, Furman, High Point, Jacksonville, James Madison, Lipscomb, Southern Miss, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington, and Wofford.
SPRING SCHEDULE SNEAK PREVIEW: The Patriots Spring Championship schedule includes six tournaments leading up to the Atlantic 10 Championship, April 30 to May 2 at Reunion Resort in Orlando, Florida.
The season begins in mid-February in Florida at the Advance Golf Partners Intercollegiate by UNC Greensboro (Feb. 13-15). The Patriots will travel to Puerto Rico in late February for the Dorado Beach Collegiate, played at TPC Dorado Beach.
The Green and Gold will host the Second Annual Ross Collegiate at Mid Pines Golf Club in Pinehurst, NC (Mar. 7-8). The team will stay in Pinehurst to participate in the Forest Creek Collegiate, hosted by Richmond (Mar. 12-13). The third tournament in March will be played in Virginia at the historic Golden Horseshoe in Williamsburg (Mar. 28-29).
In one last tune-up before the conference championship, the Patriots will play in the 45
th Annual Rutherford Intercollegiate at Penn State's Blue Course, April 16-17.
