FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason junior
Jared Lyons was named Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State Second Team starting pitcher, the organization announced on Wednesday.
Lyons, a native of Springfield, Va., finished the season with a 6-2 record and 3.73 ERA. He earned a win in five of his last seven starts of the season.
Lyons was selected Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team starting pitcher and to the A-10 All-Academic Team. He became the first Mason baseball player to earn A-10 First Team and All-Academic honors in the same season since the Patriots joined the league in 2014.
Among A-10 leaders during the 2021 season, Lyons ranked second in lowest opponent batting average (.192), tied for third in wins (6), fourth in both innings pitched (72.1) and strikeouts (76), eighth in ERA (3.73), and tied for the fourth-most complete games in the league (2).
Lyons pitched at least 6.0 innings in eight of his 12 starts. He went 4-1 with a 2.97 ERA in six starts against A-10 opponents and held A-10 opponents to a 1.69 batting average. Lyons recorded 37 strikeouts in 36.1 innings against league opponents.
The 2021 VaSID All-State Team has 11 of the Commonwealth's 14 NCAA Division I schools represented. Old Dominion and Liberty led the Commonwealth with seven All-State honorees each, followed by the University of Virginia (4), Norfolk State (3), James Madison, Richmond, VCU, Virginia Tech and William & Mary (2) and single selections from George Mason and VMI.
