FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team split a doubleheader with Richmond on Friday at Spuhler Field.
The Patriots scored the first nine runs on the way to a 12-5 victory in game one, while the Spiders won the night cap, 2-0.
Mason celebrated
Bill Brown's 40th year as head coach with a ceremony between the games.
GAME ONE (7 INNINGS)
Mason (14-27, 7-15 A-10) took the lead over Richmond (17-17, 3-11 A-10) in the second inning, sending eight batters to the plate against Spiders sophomore starter Collin Lowe.

Scott Morgan and graduate student catcher
Kyle Hayes both singled to start the inning to put runners on the corners. Graduate student left fielder
Jack DeLongchamps drove in Morgan with a sacrifice fly to put the Patriots in front 1-0.
Mason graduate student first baseman
Ryan Stoudemire singled and sophomore second baseman
Brett Stallings reached on an error, with Hayes and Stoudemire both scoring on the Spiders miscue to increase the lead to 3-0. Sophomore third baseman
South Trimble then delivered a RBI-single, with Stallings crossing the plate to make it 4-0.
In the bottom of the third, Morgan belted his sixth home run of the season, a blast over the right field fence to pad the advantage to 5-0. The Patriots have hit at least one home run in each of the last three games.
Hayes followed with a single, and after a two-out base knock by Stoudemire put runners on first and third, Hayes rumbled home on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 6-0.
In the home half of the fourth, Stallings walked and moved all the way to third on two wild pitches. Trimble walked and stole second to put two runners in scoring position. After Spiders graduate student pitcher Nolan Collins was replaced by junior Antonio Balducci, senior
Bailey Klein delivered a one-out, two-run single to center to make the score 8-0.
Richmond made the call to the bullpen and summoned freshman Mason Majors to enter the game in the fifth. Stoudemire greeted him by smashing his third home run of the season over the left field fence to make it 9-0. It was Stoudemire's first home run at Spuhler Field.

Jared Lyons allowed a single in the first, it was the only hit he surrendered over the first five innings.
In the top of the sixth, junior catcher Drew Blakely was hit by a pitch and graduate student Austin Masel singled to start the inning. Graduate student first baseman Dan Leckie put the Spiders on the board with a RBI-single, graduate student shortstop Chris Rinaldi doubled in a run, junior right fielder Jordan Schulefand plated a run with a sacrifice fly, and the Spiders scored another on an error to cut the lead to 9-4.
The Patriots responded in the bottom of the sixth against Spiders graduate student reliever Jack Corkery. Hayes and DeLongchamps each drove in a run with a single, and an error allowed another run to cross the plate to make it 12-4.
With Mason junior
Nick Zegna on the mound, Richmond scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh for the 12-5 final score.
For the Patriots, Lyons (6-2) surrendered four runs, three earned, on four hits in 5.2 innings to earn the win. He won five of his last seven starts of the season. Zegna gave up an unearned run on two hits in 1.1 innings of work. He shares the team lead with 13 appearances on the season.
For the Spiders, Lowe (0-3) allowed six runs, three earned, on seven hits in 3.0 innings and took the loss. Collins gave up two runs and didn't record an out. Balducci tossed one scoreless inning. Majors surrendered a run on two hits in one inning. Corkery gave up three runs, one earned, on two hits and didn't retire a batter.
Morgan went 3-for-3 with a home run, double, and single and scored three runs. He was also hit by a pitch. Hayes was 3-for-4 with three singles and scored three runs. Stoudemire finished 3-for-4 with a home run, two singles and scored twice. Klein and DeLongchamps each drove in two runs in the game.
GAME TWO (7 INNINGS)
Mason (14-28, 7-16 A-10) and Richmond (18-17, 4-11 A-10) were scoreless through five innings, with Patriots junior starter
Mason Posey and Spiders graduate student starter Colby Wyatt locked in a pitchers' duel.
Richmond broke the ice in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Rinaldi reached on an error and ended up on second base. Senior third baseman Justin Cook followed with a RBI-single to put the Spiders in front 1-0.
In the seventh, Richmond junior second baseman Dominic Toso added an insurance run with a solo home run to account for the 2-0 final score.
For the Patriots, Posey (2-3) allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits in a season-high 6.1 innings and took the loss. Graduate student
Jonathan Kaiser retired the final two batters in the seventh.
For the Spiders, Wyatt (4-2) scattered two hits for the complete-game shutout.
Morgan doubled and DeLongchamps singled in the game.
The Patriots and Spiders conclude the season on Saturday afternoon, with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
