Game Recap: Softball |
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The George Mason softball team dropped the final two games of a four-game series against George Washington on Sunday.

The Patriots fell in the first contest by a score of 3-1 and could not mount a comeback in a 5-4 loss in the final game.

Senior Haellie Gordon went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI on the day and launched her first collegiate home run. Freshman Sydney Bales' bat stayed hot on Sunday, going 2-for-6 with two doubles and two RBI. Bales earned her fourth multi-hit game of the season.

Fellow freshman Maddy Myers recorded her first collegiate hit and her first collegiate RBI.

The weekend series wrapped up the Patriots' conference schedule for the 2021 season. Mason finished Atlantic 10 play 9-15.

GAME ONE: GW 3, Mason 1
The first game on Sunday got off to an explosive start, as Mason plated one run off two hits, including an RBI from Gordon, in the first inning. The Patriots would leave the bases loaded to end the top half of the first and take a one-run lead.

In the next half-inning, the Colonials added two runs of their own.

George Washington would add another insurance run in the bottom of the second and their pitching staff would take over and secure the victory for the Buff & Blue.

GAME TWO: GW 5, Mason 4
In the final contest, the Colonials jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning.

Bales would chip into the GW lead with an RBI double in the second inning.

In the third, the Colonials would get that run back via a sacrifice fly. George Washington would maintain their 5-1 lead until the sixth inning.

With two outs in the top of the sixth, the Patriots tallied three consecutive doubles, leading to two runs. Senior Meghan Graham got the Mason bats started, then Bales came through again for the Patriots with another RBI double. The next batter, Myers, followed with an RBI double of her own.

The Patriots would head into the final inning down two runs, 5-3.

In the seventh, Gordon would earn a solo home run to bring Mason within one, but the Patriots could not tie the game and left two runners on base.
