DAVIDSON, N.C. – The George Mason baseball team earned a split of its four-game series at Davidson with a 10-4 victory on Sunday at Wilson Field in Davidson, N.C.
The Patriots (12-27, 5-15 A-10) fell behind Davidson (24-22, 8-12 A-10) in the second inning.
The Wildcats loaded the bases with back-to-back singles and a walk against Patriots junior
Mason Posey. With two outs, sophomore right fielder Henry Koehler drove in a pair of runs with a single to center to put Davidson in front 2-0.
Mason responded in the top of the third against Davidson freshman starter Danny Rosenfield. Patriots sophomore second baseman
Brett Stallings led off with a single, and sophomore center fielder
South Trimble and senior left fielder
Cam Reckling each walked to load the bases.
After a Davidson pitching change, senior right fielder
Bailey Klein singled to cut the lead to 2-1.
Koehler knocked in another run for the Wildcats in the home half of the fourth to make it a 3-1 game.
The Patriots scored nine unanswered runs the rest of the game.
In the fifth, Trimble and Reckling walked and Klein singled to load the bases. Trimble raced home from third on a wild pitch by Wildcats sophomore reliever Bennett Flynn to make it a one-run game, 3-2.
In the sixth, junior shortstop
Peter Nielsen ripped a one-out double down the left field line off of Davidson senior Pete Bloomberg. Stallings followed with a RBI-single to right, with Nielsen rumbling home from second to tie the score, 3-3.
Mason graduate student reliever
Jonathan Kaiser took over on the mound in the sixth and kept the Wildcats off the board for the next three innings.
With two outs in the seventh, senior first baseman
Scott Morgan was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch. Hayes then singled up the middle, with Morgan crossing the plate to give the Patriots the lead for good at 4-3.
In the top of the ninth, the Patriots sent 11 batters to the plate against four Davidson relievers to put the game away.
Morgan knocked in a run with a single, graduate student designated hitter
Jack DeLongchamps drove in a run with a double and graduate student third baseman
Cooper Mrowka plated a run with a single to pad the lead to 7-3.
Stallings then smashed his first Mason home run, a three-run blast over the left field fence to make it 10-3.
Davidson scored a run in the bottom of the ninth for the 10-4 final score.
For the Patriots, Kaiser (1-2) earned his first win with the Patriots. He allowed one run on four hits and struck out three in 4.0 innings of work. Posey gave up three runs on six hits in 4.0 innings. Senior
Austin Cabone starter the game and pitched the first inning.
For the Wildcats, Rosenfeld allowed one run on three hits in 2.1 innings., Flynn gave up a run on three hits in 2.1 innings, and Bloomberg (0-1) surrendered two runs on three hits in 2.1 innings and took the loss.
Davidson used seven pitchers in the game.
Stallings went 4-for-5 with a home run and four RBI. Reckling was 2-for-3 with two walks and a run scored. Hayes finished 2-for-4 with a walk and run scored. DeLongchamps and Klein each had two hits in the game.
Every player in the Mason lineup reached base at least once in the game. Every player in the lineup also either drove in a run or scored a run.
The Patriots host Richmond for a four-game series beginning Thursday, May 20 at Spuhler Field.
