DAVIDSON, N.C. – George Mason graduate student starter
Ryan Stoudemire struck out a season-high nine batters in a season-high seven innings of work to lead the Patriots to a 5-3 win over Davidson on Friday at Wilson Field in Davidson, N.C.
The Patriots (11-25, 4-13 A-10) fell behind Davidson (22-21, 6-11 A-10) in the first inning.
Davidson senior shortstop Alex Fedje-Johnson led off with a single and later scored on a wild pitch to put the Wildcats in front 1-0.
In the home half of the fourth, Davidson freshman third baseman Jake Willhoit led off with a double and with two outs, scored on a double by Fedje-Johnson to make it a 2-0 game.
The Patriots scored five unanswered runs.
With one out in the top of the fifth against Davidson junior starter Alex Fenton, junior shortstop
Peter Nielsen doubled to left field and sophomore center fielder
South Trimble followed with a double to right to cut the lead to 2-1.
After a single by senior left fielder
Cam Reckling put runners on the corners, senior right fielder
Bailey Klein drove in Trimble from third with a ground out to tie the score, 2-2.
In the sixth, graduate student catcher
Kyle Hayes led off with a walk and graduate student third baseman
Cooper Mrowka singled to put runners on first and third. Stoudemire helped his own cause with a ground out, with Hayes racing home to put the Patriots ahead to stay, 3-2.
The Patriots sent eight batters to the plate in the top of the seventh and took advantage of two errors to score a pair of runs to increase the advantage to 5-2. Klein and Stoudemire each drove in a run in the inning.
Davidson got a run back in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI-double by junior designated hitter Trevor Candelaria for the 5-3 final score.
For the Patriots, Stoudemire (2-9) allowed three runs on six hits in a season-high 7.0 innings to earn the win. He threw a season-high 131 pitches in the outing. Junior reliever
Matthew Henson tossed two scoreless innings to pick up his first save with the Patriots.
For the Wildcats, Fenton (2-7) allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits in 6.0 innings and took the loss. Sophomore Will Schomberg gave up an unearned run on three hits in 3.0 innings in relief.
Klein went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Stoudemire was 2-for-4 and drove in two runs. Trimble drove in a run and scored two runs for the Patriots.
The Patriots and Wildcats play a seven-inning doubleheader on Saturday, with the first pitch in game one scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Wilson Field in Davidson, N.C.
