ORLANDO, Fla. – The fifth-seeded George Mason University men's tennis team wrapped up its 2021 season with a competitive 4-1 setback to No. 4 Davidson on Friday at the USTA National Campus.
The Patriots dropped the doubles point in the contest and Davidson was able to clinch the match by taking three of the first four singles matches. However, Mason led or was tied in each of the final two matches on the courts and had a chance to flip one of the other matches down the stretch.
In doubles, Mason's star duo of senior
Ryan Charles and sophomore
Rithik Sardana made quick work of Davidson's No. 1 Kachkarov/Solares tandem, 6-1. Charles and Sardana finished the season an impressive 6-3 from the top spot.
In singles, Sardana also picked up Mason's point, defeating Davidson's Yash Parikh in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5. He finished his sophomore campaign with a solid four singles victories between the No. 1 and No. 2 positions.
When Davidson clinched the match, Mason still had great chances in both of the remaining matches. Junior
Rishab Sardana won his first set, 7-6, then was leading 2-1 in the second set.
At No. 3 singles, Charles also won his first set (7-5). He fell in the second, 6-0, and was trailing 2-1 on serve in the third when play concluded.
At No. 6 singles, junior
Erick Rivas trailed 5-2 in his first set, but came all the way back to force a tiebreak. He ultimately fell in two sets.
In all, Mason has a lot to be proud of this season while battling much adversity. The Patriots' No. 5 A-10 seed matched the program's all-time best.
