FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University men's tennis team nearly completed a singles comeback but couldn't quite get over the hump, falling to Longwood 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Mason Tennis Courts.
Trailing after the doubles point, Mason split the first four singles matches to trail, 3-2.
Herman Jentoft won for the Patriots at No. 6, but Mason could not take the point at No. 5 as the Lancers held on for the win. It marked Mason's second-straight 4-3 setback against a quality opponent.
"The guys fought hard today but came up short against a strong Longwood team," head coach Jimmy Davis said. "We're close to pushing through to another level and I can see the guys making improvements week to week. We're excited to have a few days of practice before our next match to make some adjustments in the doubles point."
