FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team split a doubleheader against St. Bonaventure on Saturday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
Mason (6-12, 0-0 A-10) senior second baseman
Daniel Brooks drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Patriots to a 2-1 walk-off win in game one. St. Bonaventure (1-7, 0-0 A-10) took the night cap, 8-3.
GAME ONE
Mason (6-11, 0-0 A-10) freshman starter
Kieran Versaw-Barnes retired the first nine Bonnies batters of the game. He didn't surrender a hit and allowed just four base runners over the first five innings.
The Patriots took the lead in the bottom of the fourth against Bonnies junior starter Elijah Baez.
With one out, senior designated hitter
Scott Morgan reached on a fielding error and moved to second on a wild pitch. Graduate student left fielder
Jack DeLongchamps then picked up his second RBI of the season, driving in Morgan with a single up the middle to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.
Morgan leads the club with 12 runs scored this season.
In the top of the sixth, the Bonnies (0-7, 0-0 A-10) recorded their first hit of the game when junior right fielder Tyler Kelder belted a solo home run over the left field fence to tie the score, 1-1.
In the home half of the seventh, graduate student catcher
Kyle Hayes hit a one-out, ground-rule double that bounced over the fence in left-center. Brooks came to the plate and sent a fly ball to left, with Hayes beating the throw home for the 2-1 walk-off win.
For Brooks, it was his first walk-off RBI in a Mason uniform. He is third on the team with nine RBI on the season.
For the Patriots, Versaw-Barnes (1-2) tossed a complete game. He allowed just one run on four hits and struck out six to earn his first win with the Green and Gold.
For the Bonnies, Baez (0-3) gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits in a complete game and took the loss.
DeLongchamps went 1-for-2 with a walk and drove in a run. Hayes was 1-for-3 and scored the winning run. Graduate student first baseman
Ryan Stoudemire finished 1-for-3.
GAME TWO
St. Bonaventure (1-7, 0-0 A-10) took the lead in the top of the first, scoring three runs on four singles and a walk against Stoudemire, who made his sixth start of the season for the Patriots.
The Patriots dented the scoreboard in the home half of the first against Bonnies senior starter Donovan Moffat.
Mason (6-12, 0-0 A-10) sophomore third baseman
South Trimble led off the inning with a triple to right field, and scored when senior right fielder
Cam Reckling singled up the middle to cut the lead to 3-1.
The Bonnies broke the game open in the top of the second when they sent 10 batters to the plate and scored four runs, one earned, on four hits to extend the advantage to 7-1.
In the fifth inning, Trimble and Reckling singled. With Trimble on third after a wild pitch, Morgan knocked in his 19th run of the season with a sacrifice fly to left to make the score 7-2.
The two teams traded runs in the sixth.
Kelder hit his second solo home run of the day for an 8-2 Bonnies advantage. Both of his home runs were in the sixth inning in each game.
In the bottom of the inning, Brooks doubled with one out, and junior shortstop
Peter Nielsen singled to put runners on the corners. Freshman center fielder
Jordan Smith drove in Brooks with a ground out.
For the Patriots, Stoudemire (1-5) allowed seven runs, four earned, on seven hits in 1.1 innings and took the loss. Junior
Mason Posey entered the game in the second inning and wasn't charged with a run. He allowed three hits in 3.2 innings of work. Junior
Matthew Henson gave up one run on three hits in 2.0 innings.
For the Bonnies, Moffat (1-1) surrendered three runs on 10 hits and struck out seven for the complete-game win.
Trimble went 3-for-4 and scored two runs. Reckling was 2-for-3 and drove in a run.
The Patriots and Bonnies wrap up the four-game series on Sunday afternoon, with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
