Fairfax, Va. -- The George Mason women's tennis team dropped its final match of the regular season to the Richmond Spiders, 4-0, this afternoon at the George Mason Tennis Courts.
The Spiders won the doubles point with a sweep of the Patriots, but the matches were close, including a tie-breaker at the No. 2 doubles. Mason's team of
Paige La and
Hannah Yang had a 5-1 lead in the tiebreaker set against the Spider's Adrienne Hayes and Sara Salemyr before the Richmond duo pulled out a tight 7-6 (8-6) win.
"Richmond is one of the top two teams in the Atlantic 10," said Patriots Head Coach Steven Curtis. "We had a chance to take the doubles point and take control of the momentum and then we started slowly in the singles. We will learn for this loss and use it to prepare us for the A-10 Championships next week."
In singles, the teams played to clinch as the Spiders picked up three singles wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 to close out a 4-0 win.
The Patriots finish the season with a 7-3 record, 2-2 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Mason will travel to the A-10 Championships in Orlando, Fla. at the USTA National Campus, April 28-May 1.
