Game Recap: Softball |
FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason softball team (11-5, 6-4 A-10) took the first two of a four-game series against St. Bonaventure on Friday afternoon.

The Patriots defeated the Bonnies in the first game by a score of 8-7, then finished off St. Bonaventure with a 6-0 win in game two.

GAME ONE: Mason 8, St. Bonaventure 7
The Mason bats got going early on Friday as junior EJ Bankson launched a two-run home run to left center to give the Patriots an early lead.

Freshman Marlaina Bozek got the Patriot offense going again in the third inning, doubling to left center, scoring freshman Sydney Bales. Senior pitcher Haellie Gordon helped herself with an RBI double to end the third. The Patriots earned four runs on just two hits in the third inning to give themselves a 6-0 lead.

The Bonnies would score three to cut the deficit in half, until the Patriots added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh to take an 8-3 lead. St. Bonaventure battled back in the bottom half of the seventh, scoring four runs, but ultimately the Patriots would hold on for the victory.

Gordon improved her overall record to 5-2 while grad student Bekah Ansbro recorded her first save of the season.

GAME TWO: Mason 6, St. Bonaventure 0
The second game was another story, as the Patriots got out early and never looked back.

Bankson's bat continued to pace the Patriots, as the first baseman earned an RBI single in the first inning and later came around to score.

Bales earned her second triple of the season, driving in junior Taylor Dadig, in the fourth inning.

Junior Amber Verstynen drove in Bozek in the fifth and senior Marissa Butts brought in junior Anna DiMari via a sac fly.

Ansbro earned a complete game shutout, allowing just one hit and three walks. The right-hander recorded 13 strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work, tying a career high.
