Fairfax, Va. -- The George Mason women's tennis team defeated St. Joseph's Hawks 5-2 today on Senior Day to improve to 6-2 overall, 2-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
"This was a good conference win today," said coach Steve Curtis. "The Hawks are always a tough one. I'm very proud of the way the team battled to get the win on Senior Day. They didn't want to let Bree and Christine down."
The point was won by the Patriots. With the first two doubles matches split, senior
Christine McCarthy and
Savanna Crowell defeated Sophia Amato and Fabiana Tort-Umpierre, 6-4, at No. 3 doubles.
In singles action Mason won matches at No. 1, 4, 5 and 6. Sophomore
Paige La won the top singles match, 6-1, 6-3 against Amanda Nava to improve to 5-2. Senior
Hannah Yang lost only one game to the Hawks Alex Kramer, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4 singles.
Mason's
Jackie Nannery won her match, 6-3, 6-4 against Ireland Amato at No. 5 singles and
Ashley Fitz-Patrick defeated Sophia Amato, 7-6, 6-3 for the Patriots. Fitz-Patrick improves to 6-1 in singles this year.
The Patriots are back on the home courts tomorrow for a Noon tilt with Delaware State.
