FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University men's tennis team picked up its second victory of the campaign Sunday afternoon with a 5-2 home triumph over Coppin State.
Mason (2-2) won five of six singles contests to secure the win in Fairfax.
"We didn't play our best tennis today. We are battling a few lingering injuries but the guys found a way to get it done," head coach Jimmy Davis said. "We have a lot of work to do in doubles to get ready for conferences so we're excited to get a couple days of practice in before our next match Wednesday."
Coppin State won the doubles point, but Mason's No. 1 duo of sophomore
Rithik Sardana and senior
Ryan Charles improved to 4-0 on the year at the top position with a 6-0 sweep of the Eagles' Green/Waterman duo.
Trailing 1-0 heading into singles, Mason tied it up after Sardana made quick work at No. 1, winning 6-1, 6-1 over Henrique Sada.
Coppin State won at No. 2 singles to go back up, 2-1, but from there, Mason took the remaining four matches.
Freshman
Hayden Postin picked up his first career singles victory with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Vansh Kapoor at No. 4.
Then, Mason went up 3-2 after junior
Erick Rivas took down Michael Michael at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-3.
Sophomore
Rami Alkhafaji secured the clinching point at No. 5, winning 6-1, 6-2 over Coppin State's Dean Waterman.
Then, at No. 6, graduate student
Luke Maxwell wrapped up the victory with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Christopher Green.
Mason returns to action on Wednesday with a 3 p.m. contest vs. Mary Washington at the Patriot Tennis Courts.
