FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University men's tennis team (1-2) gained more valuable experience against a top-flight opponent Friday afternoon during a 6-1 setback to visiting Temple (2-0) at the Mason Tennis Courts.
"We battled well today against a very tough team," head coach Jimmy Davis said. "I'm happy with our improvements week to week but we need to continue getting better on pressure points. We are a couple points away from giving ourselves a chance to win these types of matches against good programs. We're excited to bounce back with another opportunity Sunday."
Mason's No. 1 doubles team has been outstanding early in the season and Friday was no different. Sophomore
Rithik Sardana and senior
Ryan Charles went wire-to-wire with the Owls' Frumholz/Raquin duo at the top spot. The match headed to a tiebreak at 6-6, but Sardana and Charles took control in the extra points to take it, 7-4. The Mason pair is now 3-0 at No. 1 doubles to begin the campaign.
Elsewhere, sophomore
Momin Khan improved to 2-1 in singles matches this season with a triumph at the No. 5 position. He dropped the first set to Temple's Juan Araoz (6-4), before rebounding to take the second frame, 6-2. In a super tiebreaker, Khan came out on top, 10-4, to secure the win.
At No. 2 singles, junior
Rishab Sardana nearly pulled off a victory. After losing the first set, he came back to take the second in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-5). Then in the super tiebreaker, Sardana fought hard but fell, 10-6.
Freshman
Hayden Postin also made his debut for the Patriots at No. 6 singles and put together a solid effort in defeat (4-6, 4-6).
Mason wraps up the weekend with a home match vs. Coppin State on Sunday. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m.
