ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The George Mason baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Navy on Saturday afternoon, falling 7-3 in game one and 3-2 in the second game, at Max Bishop Stadium in Annapolis, Md.
GAME ONE
Mason (0-2) junior starter
Jared Lyons retired seven of the first eight batters he faced in the game.
The Midshipmen broke the ice in the bottom of the third when freshman outfielder Zane Raba drew a one-out walk, stole second, and scored on a RBI-single to left-center by junior outfielder Joe Simourian to make it 1-0.
The Patriots threatened in the top of the fourth against Navy (4-0) senior starter Charlie Connolly.
Graduate student first baseman
Ryan Stoudemire collected his first hit in a Mason uniform with a single up the middle. Graduate student third baseman
Cooper Mrowka then walked and shortstop
Peter Nielsen singled to load the bases with one out. Connolly got out of the jam with an inning-ending double play ground ball.
In the home half of the fourth, Navy scored six runs on four hits and took advantage of four walks in the inning to increase the lead to 7-0.
The Patriots scored their first run of the game against Navy junior reliever Dalton Baker in the top of the sixth.
Outfielder
Cam Reckling led off with an infield single, and with two outs Mrowka beat out an infield single to put runners on first and second. Nielsen then singled through the right side, with Reckling crossing the plate to make it 7-1.
In the top of the seventh, Mason freshman outfielder
South Trimble singled up the middle for his first collegiate hit and classmate
Jordan Smith followed with a single, his first with the Green and Gold. With two outs, designated hitter
Scott Morgan drove in two runs with a double to right-center to cut the Navy lead to 7-3, but that's as close as the Patriots would get.
For the Patriots, Lyons (0-1) allowed six earned runs on five hits, with three strikeouts and three walks in 3.1 innings and took the loss.
Hugh O'Hara gave up one earned run and walked five in 0.2 innings.
Austin Cabone pitched the sixth and seventh, tossing two scoreless innings for the Patriots.
For Navy, Connolly (2-0) scattered three singles, struck out seven and walked just two over 5.0 innings to earn the win. Baker allowed three earned runs on six hits in 2.0 innings.
Smith went 2-for-4 with two singles and a stolen base in his debut, while Trimble was 1-for-3 and scored a run in his first game. Nielsen finished 2-for-3 and drove in a run.
GAME TWO
Stoudemire made his first start on the mound for the Patriots and retired the Midshipmen in order in the first.
Navy took the lead in the bottom of the second inning when junior first baseman Zach Stevens doubled down the right field line, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a ground out to make it 1-0.
The Patriots loaded the bases in the top of the third against Navy senior starter Tommy Goodridge. Smith was hit by a pitch, Morgan singled and Mrowka was hit by a pitch, but Nielsen grounded out to end the inning.
The Patriots made the call to the bullpen, with
James Beasley taking over on the mound for Stoudemire in the bottom of the fifth.
With one out, sophomore catcher Kiel Brenczewski was hit by a pitch, junior shortstop Nico Valdez then singled to put runners on the corners. Brenczewski raced home on a wild pitch increase the lead to 2-0, and with two out, Simourian drove in Valdez with a single to make it a 3-0 game.
The Patriots rallied in the top of the eighth. With one out, Reckling and Morgan singled to put runners on first and third.
Navy senior Trey Braithwaite took over on the mound and was greeted by Nielsen, who drove in a pair of runs with a triple to right to make it a one-run game, but the Midshipmen would hang on for the 3-2 victory.
For Mason, Stoudemire (0-1) allowed one earned run on three hits and struck out three in 5.0 innings in his first start on the mound for the Patriots. Beasley surrendered two earned runs on four hits and struck out six over 4.0 innings of work.
For Navy, Goodridge (1-0) allowed three hits and struck out three over 5.0 scoreless innings to earn the win. Sophomore Reece Early gave up two earned runs on two hits in 2.1 innings, while Braithwaite stuck out two batters over 1.2 scoreless to pick up the save.
Morgan and Trinca each had two hits and Nielsen drove in two runs for the Patriots.
The Patriots are back in action in the home opener against Richmond on Friday, March 5 with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
