Fairfax, Va. – The George Mason wrestling team finished 2-1 at Patriots Duals inside the RAC today.
The Patriots defeated the Bellarmine Knights, 36-3, in the opening match and Averett Cougars, 31-6 in the last match. Mason dropped the second match today against Bucknell, 26-6.
MATCH POINTS
- Alex Madrigal (149) won all three matches today. The graduate student picked up where he left off in 2019-20 as the D1 NCAA technical falls leader earning two tech falls. He defeated Bellarmine's Mitch Collica, 16-0 and DIII Averett's Gabe LeVay, 16-1. He had 14 tech falls in 2019-20.
- 14 Mason wrestlers earned at least one win today.
- Both freshman Jonathan List and Alex Madrigal finished with a 3-0 record. List improves to 6-0 in his rookie campaign.
- Logan Messer (174) finished 2-1 today with wins against Bellarmine and Averett. The freshman is off to a 6-1 start.
- Shawn Nonaka won his match against Averett, improving to 5-2.
- At 165, Tyler Kocak (5-1) split his two matches.
- The Green and Gold were represented on the Averett sideline. Mason wrestling alums head coach Blake Roulo ('16), and volunteer assistants Ibrahim Bunduka '18 and Patrick Davis '17.
- With the 26-6 win, Bucknell has won all nine meetings between the Bison and the Patriots.
- Four Mason wrestlers will participate in the Journeyman Collegiate Classic on Sunday: Paul Pierce and Malachi DuVall will compete at 174 pounds, Nate Higley (141) pounds and Michael Rapuano (133).
