RICHMOND, Va. – The George Mason women's swimming and diving team defeated East Carolina, 166-105, while the men's team trails Davidson, 108-97, after the first day of competition at the Richmond Duals.

On the women's side, Mason won nine events against the Pirates.

Abigail Murtaugh and freshman
Ali Tyler each won two events.Â

Murtaugh placed first in the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.60), with senior
Laura Hodge second (2:12.11) and freshman
Michaela Teachey third (2:14.07).

Murtaugh also claimed the top spot in the 100-yard butterfly (58.45), with Hodge less than a second behind (59.13).

The Patriots went one-two in the 50-yard freestyle, with Tyler first (23.87) and freshman
Emma DeJong second (24.76).

Tyler also touched the wall first in the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.19), with sophomore
Megan Mastropaolo second (2:11.53) and senior
Mia McKinley third (2:16.59).

Jacquee Clabeaux won the 100-yard freestyle (51.90), with DeJong second (52.79) and freshman
Shannon Judge third (54.09).

DeJong won the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.81), while junior
Lauren Ashton finished fourth (2:01.59).

A trio of freshmen took the top three spots in the 100-yard backstroke for the Patriots, with
Anna Whelan first (58.57), Judge second (1:00.18) and freshman
Calli McEvoy third (1:01.11).

Whelan also swam to a second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (5:09.50), with freshman
Sydney Branch third in the event (5:25.52).

Sophie McKinley placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.86).

In the 200-yard medley relay, the group of Clabeaux, Whelan, Tyler and Murtaugh took the top spot (1:46.84).

Daphne Bernal, Judge and McEvoy placed second in the event (1:51.46).

In the one-meter diving event, freshman
Emma McDonald placed second (172.60).

Jared Bergan won the 200-yard butterfly (1:53.00) by nearly three seconds. Sophomore
Sorab Aman was fourth in the event (1:59.24).

The Patriots took the top three spots in the 200-yard IM, with sophomore
Anthony Nguyen winning the event (1:55.16), junior
Sammy Lucht second (1:55.49) and junior
Thomas Chapman third (1:56.47).

Nguyen was second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.99), with junior
Walter Turlington third (1:46.10), and freshman
Zane Roberts sixth (1:47.97).

Alexander Franklin finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (21.38), just three-tenths of a second back of first place.

The Patriots are back in action on Saturday morning, with the men's team continuing their dual meet against Davidson. The women's team will face Richmond.

Diving will be held at the Robins Center Natatorium and swimming at SwimRVA beginning at 9:30 a.m.
