FAIRFAX STATION, Va. – Nearly two years removed from the program's last head racing event, the George Mason University rowing team got back on the water in a time trial format to kick off the 2021-22 season at the Occoquan Chase Sunday.
 
Mason put out two V8+ boats and two V4+ squads in a busy day of racing at Sandy Run Regional Park.
 
Overall, each boat gathered valuable experience and information in the first formal competition of the campaign.
 
Mason's experienced Varsity 8+ led the way Sunday, placing sixth out of 14 teams in a time of 18:29.70. That group finished ahead of boats from Georgetown, George Washington and Virginia Tech, among others.
 
"We had a good performance from our Varsity 8+ today," head coach Joseph Richards said. "The younger members of our team gained some valuable experience. Our goal is to build on the work we did today and to continue improving throughout the rest of our fall season."
 
Mason's duo of Varsity 4+ boats finished their time trials in nearly identical form, placing 10^th and 11^th, respectively, in times of 20:55.16 and 20:55.48.
 
The Patriots' Second Varsity 8+ began its season by finishing in a time of 23:33.35.
 
The Green & Gold head to the Steel City next to compete in the Yinzer Cup Saturday in Pittsburgh.
