Fairfax, Va. – George Mason University golf head coach Greg Pieczynski has announced the addition of three student-athletes to compete during the 2020-21 season.

"I'm really excited about the addition of these three student-athletes," said Pieczynski. "I think they can all come right in and make an immediate impact. Nikita is a local product who won the prestigious Donald Ross Jr. Invitational. Colin just finished fourth in an AJGA, firing blistering rounds of 68-64. James comes from one of the most prolific golf families with his grandfather having won on the PGA tour. Obviously getting a player like James to come from a top 25 program like UCF is a huge steal for us."

Nikita Gubenko | Great Falls, Va.

A local product from Great Falls, Va., Gubenko played four years of varsity golf for Langley High School. He was a 2-time captain for the Saxons' varsity golf team. He earned first team state honors three times, first-team district honors three times and first-team regional honors all four years. He had a scoring average 71.5 strokes per round. He won the Donald Ross Junior Championship held at Pinehurst in December 2019.  He is a member of the National Slavic honors society.

James Nieporte | Boca Raton, Fla.

Nieporte is a transfer from the University of Central Florida. He was a four-year captain of the golf team at Boca Raton Community High School where he earned first team all-county. He was number one on the team three of his four years. On the junior circuit, he was a two-time Florida Junior Cup Team Member (2018 and 2019), won a Florida Junior Tournament (FJT), and finished second at Bay Hill (2018) in an American Junior Golf Association tournament (AJGA). He ranked 10th in Florida among the 2019 high school class. He earned a 4.0 GPA as a senior.

Colin Slater | Austin, Texas

Slater is a 4-year letterman in golf at Vandegrift High School in Austin, Texas. He earned a place on the 2019 all-district and all-region team. He carded an 8-under-par to finish fourth in the two-round AJGA Bob Estes Junior Championship played July 6-8, 2020 at Abilene Country Club in Texas.
