FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team dropped the final game of its three-game series against Winthrop, 6-0, on Sunday afternoon at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Va.

Mason (1-12) threatened in each of the first three innings against Winthrop (11-3) sophomore starting pitcher Tyler Jones.

In the bottom of the first, the Patriots put a pair of runners on base with back-to-back two-out singles, but a ground out ended the inning.  Mason loaded the bases in the second before Jones got out of the jam with a strikeout to end the frame.

The Eagles took the lead in the top of the third against Mason sophomore starter Jared Lyons.

Winthrop loaded the bases with one out.  Senior outfielder Scout McFalls drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly, senior Spencer Yankle plated a run with a single to left field and the Eagles also scored on a wild pitch to build a 3-0 advantage.

The Patriots again put a pair of runners on base in the home half of the third, but a fly out ended the inning.

Mason sophomore reliever Stuart Barrett entered the game in the fourth.

The Eagles added a run in the fifth and two in the seventh on the way to the 6-0 win and take two-of-three games in the series.

Lyons (0-2) allowed three runs on two hits with three strikeouts in 3.0 innings and took the loss.  Barrett surrendered three runs on four hits with four strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work.

Mason junior Austin Cabone retired the side in order in the eighth, while freshman Lyle Miller-Green pitched a scoreless ninth.

For the Eagles, Jones scattered three hits in 4.0 innings in a no-decision.  Graduate student reliever Andrew Coker (2-0) pitched three scoreless innings to earn his second win of the season.

Mason junior Jackson Barrett reached base all four of his plate appearances, with a single and three walks.

The Patriots had six hits in the game, all singles.  The Eagles scored six runs on seven hits in the game.

The Patriots are back in action when they travel to Radford on Tuesday, March 10 and Virginia Tech on Wednesday, March 11.  The first pitch for both games is scheduled for 4 p.m.
