Fairfax, Va.-- George Mason wrestler Alex Madrigal will get another season with the Patriots.

The senior has been granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA.

"We are excited that Alex has been granted an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA," said Head Coach Frank Beasley. "It was unfortunate that he missed an entire calendar year because of the severity of an injury. We had hoped to have him wrestle for us when he transferred to George Mason in the fall 2018 but he was still recovering from surgery and did not get cleared until after the season. We are very excited about the strides he has made since he arrived at Mason and we are confident that he will make the most his extra year of eligibility."
 
A native of Chicago, Madrigal sat out the 2018-19 season after having offseason surgery. He transferred to Mason after two seasons at Old Dominion where he was a two-time NCAA qualifier (133/141) while competing for the Monarchs. 
 
"I am grateful to have another season of eligibility," said Madrigal. "Wrestling is a lifelong passion of mine and I am determined to finish on a positive. I will use the extra year of eligibility to complete my master's degree."
 
The 141-pounder finished his first season competing for the Patriots with a season-high 28 wins (28-15) and was designated an NCAA Alternate for the NCAA Championship. He was ranked as high as 17^th nationally this season.
 
Earlier this week, Madrigal received the NCAA Most Technical Falls award in Division I. The Patriot captain led all NCAA Division I wrestlers in tech falls by a landslide with 14, five more than the trio of Spencer Lee (Iowa), Pat Glory (Princeton) and Nicholas Piccininni (Oklahoma State).

Madrigal was recently accepted into the George Mason educational psychology graduate program to pursue a Master's in Psychology.
