Burke, Va.-- In a match that was closer than the final score, the Patriots defeated Mary Washington, 7-0, at the Burke Racquet and Swim Club.
Four of the six singles matches were determined in a third-tiebreaker set against the Eagles.
"I was very proud of how we competed tonight," said Head Coach Steve Curtis. "We didn't play our best tennis but battled and found a way to win some tight singles matches."
Mason's Paige La continues to find a way to win. The freshman won in a tie-breaker set (7-6(2), 2-6, 14-12) against Mary Washington's Claire Coleman at the top singles position. La improves to 13-3 on the season. With a tie-breaker win at No. 3 singles, the Patriots' Hannah Yang defeated Abby Moghtader.
At the top doubles position, La and Yang defeated the duo of Coleman and Moghtader in a tight 7-6(2) match. As a doubles team, the two improved to 11-4.
At the No. 2 singles position, Brianna Gibbs won, 6-3, 1-6, 10-7, against the Eagles Lauren Quinn.
The Patriots Jackie Nannery dropped her first set, 6-4, to Rachel Cooper at the fourth singles spot, but bounced back to win the second set 6-3, before taking the match with a 10-3 score in the tie-breaker set.
The No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches were determined in straight sets. Marium Raza defeated MWU's Amanda Hagino and Mason's Isabella Daverio disposed of Zoe Panizza, 6-3, 6-2. Daverio moves to 5-0 this season.
In doubles action, Mason's Ashley Fitzpatrick teamed up with Gibbs to take a 6-2 doubles win, improving to 4-1. The team of Nannery and Daverio defeated the Eagles duo of Quinn and Cooper, 6-3.
Mason will host George Washington in an Atlantic 10 match next Saturday at the Burke Racquet and Swim Club, beginning at 6:45 p.m.
