DeLAND, Fla. - The George Mason softball team (0-2) dropped its first two contests of 2020 on Friday in DeLand, Fla.at the Stetson Lead-Off Classic.

In game one, the Patriots got off to a slow start.

Mason did not record a hit until the bottom of the sixth inning when senior Sydnee Wells pulled one into left field. Redshirt junior Adriana Erickson followed in Wells' footsteps with a single of her own.

With two runners on, freshman Annie Villalobos stepped to the plate and took a 2-1 fastball over the left field wall. The three-run homer cut the Bearkats 6-0 lead in half in the sixth inning and was Villalobos' first career home run in just her third career at-bat.

The Patriots followed the explosive half-inning with a four-hit bottom of the seventh, led off by sophomore Taylor Dadig. Junior Meghan Graham brought the run in with a single through the five hole, bringing Mason within two runs. Wells then earned her second hit of the game, setting up Erickson again with runners on base.

Erickson roped a ball into left center, scoring two runs tying the game at six. The Patriots' offensive surge earned them back-to-back three-run innings.

In extra innings, the Bearkats scored in the top of the eighth with a hit into left field giving Sam Houston State an 8-7 lead.

Villalobos notched her second hit of the game in the bottom of the eighth, but the Patriots could not bring her across, falling to the Bearkats in extras 8-7. Villalobos led the Patriots with a team high three RBIs, going 2-for-4 with two hits and a run scored. In a no decision effort, redshirt senior Marina Vitalich threw the first five innings on 82 pitches, recording three strikeouts and surrendering four earned runs of 11 hits.

In the second contest, Mason held a one-run lead for the majority of the game, only to see it disappear in a three-run sixth inning by the Hatters.

The Patriots raced out to an early one-run lead after sophomore EJ Bankson recorded a sacrifice fly that scored junior Saige Cisler, who reached via throwing error, in the second inning.

Mason had a great opportunity at insurance runs in the top of third when they had bases loaded with only one out but could not capitalize, coming away with no runs. The same held true in the fourth inning, when the Patriots had three runners on base again but could not bring anyone across the plate.

In the fifth inning, Bankson notched another RBI, this time a base hit to left field. The hit scored fellow sophomore Amber Verstynen, who singled earlier in the inning.

The pair of runs batted in for Bankson were not enough as the Hatters scored three runs in the sixth inning to take the lead and eventually win by a score of 4-2.

Mason, who out-hit Stetson 10-7, had eight different batters record a hit in the contest. The Patriots left 13 on base in the loss.
