COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The George Mason baseball team allowed 10 unanswered runs and fell to Maryland, 13-3, on Tuesday at Bob "Turtle" Stadium in College Park, Md.
Maryland (6-1) took an early lead in the bottom of the second inning against Mason sophomore starter
Nate Young. Terrapins sophomore infielder Maxwell Costes hit a solo home run over the left field wall, his third of the season, to put the Terrapins in front 1-0.
With two outs in the home half of the third, Maryland junior center fielder Chris Alleyne and freshman left fielder Tucker Flint walked to keep the inning going. Junior right fielder Randy Bednar then singled to left, with Alleyne scoring on the play to increase the lead to 2-0.
With one out in the top of the fourth, the Patriots picked up their first hit of the day against Maryland junior starter Zach Thompson.

Lyle Miller-Green doubled down the left field line for his first collegiate extra-base hit. With two outs, senior right fielder
Bailey Klein drove in a run with a single through the left side to make it a 2-1 game.
The Patriots loaded the bases with a single and a walk but were unable to plate another run in the inning.
Maryland loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the fourth on a single, walk and a hit batsman. Flint was then hit by a pitch to force in a run to increase the Terrapins lead to 3-1.
Young was able to limit the damage when he got Bednar to ground out with the bases loaded.
In the top of the sixth Miller-Green led off with a walk against Maryland sophomore reliever Trevor LaBonte. Mason junior first baseman
Scott Morgan then tied the game with one swing, belting a two-run homer to straightaway center field to make it a 3-3 game.
Maryland sent eight batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth against three different Mason pitchers and took the lead again.
Mason sophomore right-hander
Stuart Barrett entered the game with runners on the corners and two outs. He issued three straight walks to the Terrapins, as Maryland regained the lead 5-3.
After the Patriots made the call to the bullpen, sophomore
Nick Zegna recorded a strikeout to end the inning.
Maryland then sent eight more batters to the plate in the seventh and tacked on three more runs. The Terrapins scored a run on a wild pitch and added two more when Bednar smashed a two-run home run over the left field wall to make the score 8-3.
In the eighth, the Terrapins sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs on one hit, four walks and two hit batsmen for the 13-3 final.
The Patriots used seven pitchers in the game.
Young allowed three runs on four hits with six strikeouts in 4.0 innings. Junior
Austin Cabone was charged with two runs on two hits in 1.2 innings. Sophomore
Stuart Barrett (0-1) walked three batters faced, Zegna surrendered three runs on two hits in 1.1 innings. Freshman
Matthew Sykes allowed four runs on one hit and walked two in one-third of an inning.
Mason pitchers combined to walk 14 and hit four batters in the game, with eight of those baserunners coming around to score.
The Patriots scored three runs on seven hits and left seven runners on base, while the Terrapins scored 13 runs on nine hits and stranded 15 baserunners.
The Patriots are back on the diamond for their first home series of the season, hosting Iona for three games beginning Friday, Feb. 28 at Spuhler Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
