Patriots Tangle With Maryland Tuesday

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team takes on Maryland in a midweek, non-conference game on Tuesday with the first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium in College Park, Md.
 
Last time out, Mason (0-5) fell at FIU, 7-5, on Sunday at FIU Baseball Stadium in Miami, Fla.
 
Junior outfielder Cam Reckling is batting .375 in two games played.  Graduate student infielder Cooper Mrowka is hitting .333 and is tied for the team lead with four runs scored in five games played. 
 
Junior first baseman Scott Morgan has a .333 average and leads the club with two home runs in four game played.  Freshman Peter Nielsen is hitting .294 and is tied for the team lead with five hits.
 
The Patriots have a team batting average of .215 and a team ERA of 10.32 through five games.
 
Last season, the Patriots built a 7-0 lead over the first six innings and defeated the Terrapins, 9-5, on April 17, 2019 at Spuhler Field. 
 
Bailey Klein went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, two RBI and scored three runs.  Daniel Brooks was 1-for-4 and drove in a run.
 
Then-freshman Patrick Halligan kept the Terrapins guessing over the first six innings, limiting Maryland to just two singles and four total baserunners to earn the win.
 
Mason and Maryland have met 50 times, with the Patriots holding a 28-22 advantage in the all-time series.
 
SCOUTING MARYLAND
 
Maryland finished the 2019 season with an overall record of 29-29, including a mark of 12-12 against BIG TEN Conference opponents.  The Terrapins went 11-15 at home, 16-11 on the road and 2-3 in games played at a neutral site last season.
 
The Terrapins have started the 2020 campaign with 5-1 record. 
 
Maryland began the season with three straight wins.  The Terrapins downed Charleston Southern (11-2), Iona (8-2) and College of Charleston (4-2 in 10 innings) opening weekend.
 
The Terrapins returned home and took two-of-three from Rhode Island this past weekend at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.  Maryland won the first game of the series, 9-3, and posted a 3-0 shutout on Sunday.  Rhode Island claimed the middle game, 11-8.
 
Junior infielder Tommy Gardiner leads the team with a .412 average with four RBI, junior outfielder Randy Bednar is hitting .333 and leads the team with six RBI, while sophomore infielder Maxwell Costes has a .333 average and leads the club with two home runs.
 
On the mound, junior Sean Fisher (2-0, 0.77 ERA) has won each of his first two starts of the season.  Junior Mark DiLuia (1-0, 0.00 ERA) and sophomore Trevor LaBonte (0-0, 4.50 ERA) have each recorded one save.
 
Maryland has a team batting average of .238 and a team ERA of 2.45 through six games.
