MIAMI, Fla. – The George Mason baseball team dropped the middle game of its three-game series against Florida International, 16-4, on Saturday night at FIU Baseball Stadium in Miami, Fla.
Mason (0-4) fell behind in the first inning when FIU (6-0) sent eight batters to the plate and scored four runs on three hits against starter
Mason Posey to jump in front, 4-0. The Patriots committed two errors in the inning.
The Patriots got on the scoreboard in the top of the third against FIU junior starter Tyler Myrick. Freshman outfielder
Jackson Barrett led off with a single and later in the inning scored on a wild pitch to make the score 4-1.
In the top of the fourth, junior first baseman
Scott Morgan hit a leadoff home run, his team-leading second of the season, to make it a 4-2 game.
Barrett was hit by a pitch to start the fifth and freshman outfielder
Craig Miles, Jr. then walked. With one out, Mason freshman designated hitter
Lyle Miller-Green drove in a pair of runs with a single to tie the game, 4-4.
The Golden Panthers scored a run on a balk and another on a two-out double by freshman infielder Ben Rozenblum in the home half of the fifth inning to re-take the lead at 6-4.
FIU scored 10 more runs from the sixth through the eighth inning against three different Mason pitchers for the 16-4 victory.
Posey (0-2) allowed six runs, five earned, on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts over 5.0 innings. Freshman
Matthew Sykes pitched one inning in his Mason debut, allowing four runs, three earned, on a hit and three walks.
Junior
Michael Yuille made his season debut and surrendered six runs on six hits in an inning of work. Junior
Austin Cabone allowed a hit and retired three batters in the eighth inning in his season debut.
Myrick allowed four runs on four hits with three walks and a strikeout over 4.1 innings in a no-decision. Junior Steven Casey (2-0) earned the win, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings in relief.
Miller-Green went 1-for-4 and drove in two runs in a game for the second time this season, while Morgan was 1-for-4 with a solo home run.
Every player in the starting lineup for the Golden Panthers either drove in a run or scored a run. FIU scored 16 runs on 15 hits, while the Patriots scored four runs on five hits in the game.
Rosenblum went 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored, while senior outfielder Juan Teixeira was 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Panthers.
FIU has outscored its opponents 73-16 through six games. The 73 runs scored rank fourth-most in the nation.
The Patriots and Panthers wrap up the series on Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. at FIU Baseball Stadium in Miami, Fla.
