ALEXANDRIA, Va. - In one of the closest 7-0 matches you'll ever see, Mason dropped its weekend opener to James Madison Friday afternoon at Belle Haven Country Club in Alexandria.
Four singles matches went the distance in the contest, while two of the three doubles contests went to tiebreakers.
"We battled hard and competed well against a very strong team," head coach Jimmy Davis said. "The score line doesn't show how close we were to turning the momentum in that match, but we need major work on plying our games in pressure moments. We're excited to have another opportunity this weekend and make some of the adjustments we saw from today."
In doubles, the No. 2 team of
Ryan Charles and
Rithik Sardana went to a tiebreak tied at 6-6 but fell 7-2 in the extra points. Meanwhile at No. 3,
Edward Ayers and
Rishab Sardana also went to a 6-6 tiebreak and dropped the extra points 7-4.
In singles, Ayers won his first set, 6-3, at No. 1, then dropped the second, 6-2. In the third, Ayers went to a tiebreaker with Paul Mendoza, but dropped that tiebreaker 7-4 in a tightly-contested conclusion to a tight match.
Rithik Sardana won his first set tiebreaker, 7-5, at No. 3, but then fell in a second-set tiebreaker, 7-5. He dropped the final set, 6-3, but fought hard throughout the match.
