HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The George Mason softball team (1-9) dropped their final contest of their season opening road trip against Providence by a score of 3-1 on Sunday at Sam Houston State University.
The Patriots got out to an early one -run advantage when junior Meghan Graham recorded a leadoff single. Later in the inning, sophomore Taylor Dadig singled down the left field line, scoring junior Amelia Ely who got onboard via a walk.
Senior Marina Vitalich threw 4.1 innings of no hit softball, until a one-out single broke the no hitter in the bottom of the fifth. Vitalich's dominance continued through the seventh.
In the seventh, the Patriots' bats could not provide any insurance runs for Vitalich as the score remained 1-0 heading into the final half inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Friars' bats came alive, as they earned a leadoff home run to left field to tie the game. Later in the inning with a runner on base, Providence's offense proved to be too much for Mason as they earned a walk-off two-run homer over the left field wall to defeat the Patriots by a score of 3-1.
At the end of the road trip, Dadig currently leads the Patriots in batting average (.391) and hits (9) while freshman Annie Villalobos, redshirt junior Adriana Erickson and Graham lead the Green & Gold in runs batted in (4). Graham leads Mason in on base percentage (.486).
