Box Score vs. CNU
The Mason women's tennis team began its 2019-20 season winning both its matches at the Mason Invitational played this weekend on campus.
The Patriots defeated Delaware State, 7-0 to start the tournament then defeated the CNU Captains 4-3 in the nightcap on Saturday.
"We overcame some adversity as a team today," Head Coach Steve Curtis said. "We showed our team depth as well as fight today to secure the wins. I am very proud of this young team."
Mason's three freshman got solid starts to their collegiate careers each winning two singles matches apiece.
At the top singles position,
Paige La (Fairfax, Va./ Robinson) got the freshman jitters out of the way quickly after losing the first game she responded by winning six straight games and the first set to defeat Delaware State's Cassandra Boltman, 6-1, 6-2. She defeated CNU's top player Johana Ronta-aho, 6-2, 6-4.
Freshmen
Isabella Daverio (Richfield, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) and
Ashley Fitz-Patrick (Vienna, Va./Marshall) each won two singles from the middle of the line-up.
Mason was down 0-2 against CNU after
Brianna Gibbs (doubles) and
Hannah Yang (singles) had to default their matches due to medical reasons. Fitz-Patrick put the Patriots on the board, but a singles' win by the Pirates stretched the lead back to two, 3-1. Daverio defeated Ana Borga at the No. 5 position and La got her singles win at No. 1 to knot the match at 3-3.
Sophomore
Marium Raza earned the deciding point in a comeback victory in her match at No. 4 singles. Raza, who earlier had won her singles match against Alina Polyvana from Delaware State, had to battle from behind to win 6-7(8), 6-2, 10-7 against the Pirates' Reagan Delp.
"Raza was incredible in her comeback win and all three freshman played great in gaining their wins," Curtis added.
