The George Mason women's tennis program will begin their 2019-20 campaign hosting the Mason Invitational to be played on Saturday at the west campus tennis complex.
Teams from Christopher Newport and Delaware State are traveling to Fairfax for the one-day event. Mason opens play against Delaware State at 10:00 am. The Patriots will finish the day with a 5:30 pm match against the CNU Captains.
"I am very excited about this young team," Head Coach Steve Curtis said. "This is an opportunity to get all of our players match play early in the fall."
The Patriots return five regular starters, including 2019 All-Atlantic 10 Second Team selection
Brianna Gibbs. The junior anchored the No. 2 singles position for Mason throughout the 2018-19 campaign, picked up seven victories and went 3-1 in tournament action. She played exceptionally well in doubles, where she partnered with
Sydney Green at the No. 1 spot.
In addition to Gibbs, the junior class returns
Christine McCarthy and
Hannah Yang. McCarthy finished the season with a 9-5 overall singles record, including a 6-4 record in dual action and a 3-1 mark in tournament play. Yang posted an 8-10 overall singles record and a 7-9 mark in dual action.
Sophomores
Hannah Harrod,
Jackie Nannery and
Marium Raza return after impactful freshman campaigns. Harrod and Nannery partnered to go 13-7 in dual doubles. In singles, Harrod finished 12-6 and 3-2 in league play. Nannery was 12-6 in dual action. In addition, Raza won 10 of her 11 dual matches on the year and is a perfect 6-0 at No. 6 singles, providing some consistency on that end of the lineup.
Mason welcomes three freshmen,
Isabella Daverio (Richfield, Ohio),
Ashley Fitz-Patrick (Vienna, Va.) and
Paige La (Fairfax, Va.).
