Loyola Fed Cup Bracket

    *Paige La and Hannah Yang win Championship

Baltimore, Md—The Mason team of Paige La and Hannah Yang were crowned champions this weekend at the Loyola Tennis Invitational at the McClure Tennis Center at Ridley Athletic Complex. The pair defeated the defending champions from Loyola, Kateri Martin and Abigail Thornton.
 
"I am very pleased with our play this weekend," Coach Steven Curtis said.  "We overcame some issues as a team and still had some terrific results."  
 
In the unique Points of the Compass draw utilized in the event, each team divides into pairs. Those duos compete against duos from other schools in a best-of-three format in each round, consisting of two singles matches and a doubles contest.
 
The win marks the first Mason championship in only its third Loyola Invitational. La & Yang went 4-0 in doubles play, then combined to post a 5-3 mark in singles to win four straight rounds and win top medalist honors. Yang bowed out of two singles matches due to injury.
 
In the opening round, La and Yang defeated Brooke Santoriello and Genevieve Wurtz from the host school Loyola, 2-1. La swept her two singles matches and Yang defaulted to injury. The duo followed up with a sweep of the team of Grace Conrad and Alyssa Sarver form Lafayette. La defeated Conrad, 6-2, 6-1. Yang won 6-1, 6-3 against Sarver.
 
In the semifinals, the tandem took two of three, defeating another Lafayette pair. La defeated Martin, 7-5, 6-2, while Synder won by default against Yang. The team won 6-0 in the doubles match.
 
In Sunday's championship round, the Patriots pair defeated Loyola's Kateri Martin and Abigail Thornton, 2-1, who had to defeat two Patriots teams to get to the finals. La edged past Martin, 7-5, 6-2. Mason's team won the doubles match, 7-5.
 
Overall, three of the four Mason teams won its opening round matches and advanced. The team of Brianna Gibbs and Ashley Fitzpatrick won two straight before falling in the semi-finals to Loyola's Martin & Thornton.
 
Fitz-Patrick won all four of her singles matches, including a tightly contested match against Loyola's Abigail Thornton, 7-5, 7-6(3-0), who won her three other singles matches.
