George Mason wrestling coach
Frank Beasley announced the incoming members of the team for the upcoming 2019-20 season. The Patriots added 11 incoming freshman and one graduate transfer to the team.
"We are very pleased with our recruiting class," Beasley said. "The assistant coaches did a great job recruiting the right student-athletes. Culture is very important to our program and these student-athletes epitomize the culture that we have built at Mason. Couple that with their strong athletic backgrounds, and they will help take our program to new heights."
Lukasz Walendzak. | Indianapolis Cathedral High School | Bloomington, Ind. | 125
A wrestling team captain at Indianapolis Cathedral High School, Walendzak is a three-time regional champion and has a fourth and eighth-place finish in the state championships. He comes to Mason with 161 high school wins. He was named to the All-State Academic Team twice.
"Lukasz has the ability to make an impact in our lineup right away," Beasley added. "He is battled tested as he comes from a very good high school program."
Josh Jones | Saucon Valley High School | Hellertown, Pa. | 133
Pennsylvania State Champion in 2019 and a three-time PIAA place-winner, Jones is nationally ranked and is a Beast of the East place-winner.
"Josh was the first recruit I went after in this class," Beasley added. "We identified him right away as someone who fit our mold and could be extremely successful. He is going to make an immediate and long-term impact in our program."
Shawn Nonaka | C.D. Hylton High School | Woodbridge, Va. | 141
Nonaka, a third-place finisher at the VHSL State Championship, won 144 matches in high school. He is projected to wrestle at 141.
"Shawn is a gritty competitor," Beasley added. "He competes hard in everything he does which is going to make him very successful."
Drew Dickson | Porter Ridge High School | Indian Trail, NC | 149
Dickson, a runner-up at the North Carolina State Championship, finished his high school career with 149 wins.
"Drew is growing and developing at a rapid rate," Beasley said. "He made a big jump in his last year of high school and we expect him to continue to make big strides here."
Alec English | Kane Area High School | Kane, Pa. | 157/165
English finished runner-up at the Pennsylvania State Championship and won 122 high school matches. He was team MVP three years. He is projected to wrestle at 157/165 pounds.
"Alec really came on strong over the last year," Beasley added. "He wrestles a unique style that is fun to watch. He will be a fan favorite at Mason."
Anthony Robinson | Williamsport Area High School | Williamsport, Pa. | 157/165
Robinson, high school team captain, was a Pennsylvania State Qualifier. He won 75 high school matches and is projected to wrestle for the Patriots at 157/165 pounds
"Anthony has a lot of athletic ability and potential," Beasley said. "He is picking up things quickly and making great improvements already."
Rodney Winston Jr. | Rockdale County High School |Conyers, Ga. | 157/165
A two-year team captain, Winston earned a second and fourth place finish at the Georgia State High School Championships. He won 109 matches in high school.
"Rodney has a lot of energy and passion for the sport," Beasley commented. "We look forward to watching him develop over time."
Loranzo Rajaonarivelo | Wakefield High School | Arlington, Va. | 165
2019 Virginia State Champion, Rajaonarivelo has won 114 high school matches. He was named 2019 Arlington Male Athlete of the Year and selected to the Virginia All-Star Dual team. He was the 2018 NOVA Classic Champion. He is projected to wrestle for the Patriots at 165.
"Loranzo was one of the best wrestlers in Virginia last year," Beasley said. "One of our goals is to keep the best local and statewide wrestlers here at George Mason and we think Loranzo is a great fit."
Rayan El-Kournayti | Robinson Secondary High School | Fairfax, Va. | 165/174
Coached by Mason great, Brian Hazard, El-Kournayti is the 2019 state runner-up at the VHSL Championship helping the Rams to the State Championship. He was voted 2019 Robinson Most Improved Wrestler. He is projected to wrestle at Mason at 165/174.
"Rayan showed incredible progress this past season," Beasley said. "He went from being a backup to a state finalist in a short time. He has made immense improvements."
Tony Lombardo | Bethlehem Catholic High School | Bethlehem, Pa. | 174
Lombardo, a graduate transfer from Binghamton, has 50 collegiate match wins. He is projected to wrestle for the Patriots at 174 pounds.
"Tony adds a lot of experience and leadership to our young team," Beasley said. "He is a seasoned veteran who we expect to have a breakout season."
Jeremy Seymour | West Scranton High School | Scranton, Pa. 174/184
Seymour, projected to wrestle at 174/185, finished seventh at the Pennsylvania State Championship. He has 129 high school match wins. A four-year member of the school's All-Academic Team.
"Jeremy has a great attitude and outlook," Beasley said. "He brings a lot of personality to the team but is also a hard worker who gives his best every day."
Jake Slinger | Upper Saint Clair High School | Pittsburgh, Pa. | Heavyweight
Nationally ranked, Slinger is a two-time National High School Coaches Association Nationals and FloNationals Place winner. He has a second and a seventh-place finish at the state championship. He was named All-State and NHSCA All-American twice.
"Jake works hard and does all the right things to have a great career," Beasley said. "We expect him to make an immediate and lasting impact on our program."
