FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason cross country is back in action this weekend as the men and women host the Mason Invitational on Friday afternoon at Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg, Va.
The Mason women will compete on the 5k course at 4:30 p.m. and the men will take off at 5:15 p.m. on the 8k course.
The Patriots have hosted the Mason Invitational at Oatlands Plantation each of the last eight years. This weekend's meet will serve as preparation for the Atlantic 10 Championships, which will be hosted by Mason at the Oatlands Plantation on Nov. 2.
Mason will see several A-10 competitors on Friday: Duquesne, George Washington, Richmond, Saint Joseph's and VCU. Crosstown rival American rounds out the competition.
This will be the Patriots first meet since the season-opening weekend in which both the men and women placed third at the Spider Alumni Open on Aug. 31 at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville, Va. The Mason men scored 56 points in the 5k as
Jake Lonsdale paced the Patriots with a time of 15:29.3 to finish seventh overall. The women scored 75 points in the two-mile race behind
Annabelle Eastman's second-place finish with a time of 11:16.9.
After this weekend, the Patriots have just two more meets before championship season begins. They'll run the Paul Short Invitational on Oct. 5 in Bethlehem, Pa., and then the Princeton Invitational on Oct. 14 in Princeton, N.J. After the A-10 Championships on Nov. 2 at Oatlands Plantation, the NCAA Southeast Regional Championship will take place on Nov. 15 in Earlysville, Va., hosted by the University of Virginia.
The women began the season ranked 15th in the Southeast Region preseason poll, breaking through the rankings for the first time since 2011. Their talent was also acknowledged in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll in which they were selected to finish fourth, for their highest expected finish since joining the A-10 in 2013.
The Mason men were selected to finish second overall in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll. The men received 151 points including one first-place vote. Last season, the Patriots finished fifth at the Atlantic 10 Championships for its fifth top-five finish in the conference over the last six years.
