FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's and women's track and field teams continued their standard of excellence in the classroom in 2018-19 and were recognized for both individual and collective achievements by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Both the men's and women's programs were named All-Academic Teams. The women have earned the award every season for the last eight campaigns, while the men have collected the honor in seven of the past eight years.
In order to be recognized as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team, a team must have at least a 3.0 cumulative team GPA. The George Mason men's team finished the 2017-18 academic year with a cumulative GPA of 3.1, while the women's team finished the season with a 3.31 GPA.
In addition,
Ashley Lewis and
Blaine Lacey were named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track & Field Team. This is the third straight season that Lewis has earned the honor, and the second year in a row that Lacey has received the award.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track & Field Team as an individual, student-athletes must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25. In addition, in indoor track, the team had to finish the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 in a relay event. Or, during the outdoor season, they must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
Lewis, a rising senior from Boston, Mass., reached the NCAA Outdoor East Preliminary in the 800-meter run. The neuroscience major won the 800m run during the indoor season and was part of the winning Mason team in the 4x400m relay at the A-10 Outdoor Championship.
Lacey, a senior from Chesapeake, Va. and systems engineering major, advanced to the NCAA Outdoor East Preliminary in the 800-meter dash and also was the silver medalist in the 1000m run at the A-10 Indoor Championship.
