FAIRFAX, Va. – Track & field graduate student John Seals etched his name into the record books Wednesday, becoming just the third student-athlete in George Mason University history to earn multiple Academic All-America accolades.

After being named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® Third Team in 2017, Seals once again garnered that designation in 2019 while earning a spot on the third team.

"John has had a tremendous impact on our program. In addition to his outstanding athletic achievements, to watch him balance that with the level of excellence he's sustained in the classroom, while in an extremely challenging major, has been hugely gratifying," head coach Andrew Gerard said. "He's embodied the term 'student-athlete' and is a great ambassador for our program and department. We're certainly proud of him having worn our singlet."

Seals now joins Emily Littell (women's soccer, 2017-2018) and Art Kulans (men's volleyball, 2002-2003) as the only other Mason student-athletes to garner multiple Academic All-America honors.

Mason student-athletes have combined to earn 15 Google Cloud Academic All-America® accolades over the past 30 years. After totaling eight Academic All-America honors from 1990-2015 as an athletic department, Patriot student-athletes have combined to garner seven Academic All-America® designations in just the past four years.

The Google Cloud Academic All-America® program is the only Academic All-America designation recognized by the NCAA. To be eligible for Google Cloud Academic All-District and All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at their current institution and be nominated by their sports information director.

A 2017 USTFCCCA Second Team All-American in the heptathlon, Seals is a four-time NCAA qualifier and seven-time A-10 champion. He has been named the Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Field performer on two occasions. He holds the A-10 record in the heptathlon.

For his work in the classroom, Seals has been named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team three times and the A-10 All-Academic Team on four occasions. He is a three-year Provost Scholar at Mason and has been named to the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll eight times.

Seals, who recently completed his first year of graduate school, earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Mason while carrying a 3.75 GPA.
