FAIRFAX STATION, Va. – The George Mason University rowing team took part in its penultimate event of the 2019 season Sunday afternoon while hosting the annual George Cup on the waters of the Occoquan River.
Competing against local "Georges" – George Washington and Georgetown – the Patriots made their final preparations before culminating their season at the 2019 Atlantic 10 Championship on May 18.
On Sunday, Mason's Varsity 8+ vastly improved upon its previous Kerr Cup performance, beating both their heat and petite final times by more than 30 seconds. The Patriots clocked in at 7:11.70 at the George Cup, with the hopes of continuing the upward climb into the conference regatta.
Mason's Second Varsity 8+ placed third at the George Cup in a time of 7:49.60. That boat has battled through some ups and downs this season and will look to focus on the consistent elements of their racing as the league race approaches.
Wrapping up the Mason contingent, the Varsity 4+ finished the George Cup in a time of 8:49.70. That time was more than three seconds faster than their race at the Kerr Cup in the most recent outing.
Mason's contingent of boats will next compete in the A-10 Championship in Cherry Hill, N.J. A full schedule will be announced in the coming days.
