FAIRFAX, Va. – Senior
Sydney Green fittingly picked up her 100
th victory in a Mason uniform on the program's Senior Day, as the women's tennis team swept Monmouth Sunday afternoon to highlight festivities at the Mason Tennis Complex.
Green claimed victory in both doubles and singles to help Mason improve to 14-6 on the year. The team also honored seniors
Sutherlyn Brinn and
Lauren Dupuis in a ceremony prior to the match.
Dupuis, who began her career at Louisiana, has been a key two-year contributor for the Patriots. She posted a 4-1 singles record as a junior and went 5-0 in doubles. Despite battling injury this season, she has still made an impact for the Green & Gold. Brinn has put together a three-year career for the Green & Gold while picking up six singles victories. Her positive energy has been a welcome part of the team and she has contributed in many ways to the program.
In Sunday's match, Green partnered with sophomore
Brianna Gibbs to grab her 100th win while leading the Patriots at No. 1. That tandem put together a complete 6-1 victory. In addition, freshmen
Hannah Harrod and
Jackie Nannery dominated at No. 2 while defeating the Monmouth tandem of Gasser and Goff, 6-2. To round out the doubles sweep, sophomore
Hannah Yang and junior
Rachel Lee cruised 6-1 at No. 3.
Harrod and Nannery improved to 10-5 in dual doubles with the victory, while Yang and Lee are now 9-6.
In singles, Green's 101st win came in strong fashion. She breezed through the first set, 6-2, then improved upon that start with a 6-1 triumph in the second.
Her victory and Harrod's win at No. 2 (her first start at that position) helped Mason build a 3-0 advantage. Harrod won her first set, 6-2, then swept her second frame (6-0).
Nannery also won in easy fashion, taking down Chinonye Gabriel of Monmouth, 6-1, 6-1.
Student-athletes No. 4-6 also claimed victory in straight sets for Mason to finish off the well-played match for the Patriots. Sophomore
Christine McCarthy won by the same score in both sets (6-2, 6-2) over Sophia Frederickson, while fellow sophomore
Kayleigh Hahn did not give up a game during a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 5.
Lee then took care of business at No. 6, taking down Sydney DeNardo 6-0, 6-1.
The Patriots return to Fairfax Wednesday (Apr. 10) for the first of five-straight A-10 matches. The Green & Gold will take on VCU at 3:30 p.m. at the Mason Tennis Complex.
