FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University women's tennis team picked up a strong 4-3 victory over Patriot League power Loyola (Md.) on Saturday at the Mason Tennis Complex.
The Greyhounds entered the match with an 11-2 record and a 3-1 Patriot league mark, but the Green & Gold got the job done on the strength of taking the doubles point and claiming victory in three singles matches.
"I was very proud of our team victory today against a tough Greyhound squad," head coach Steve Curtis said. "I loved the fight and the support we showed."
Mason won two of three doubles matches to start the match in solid fashion. The Patriots dropped the No. 1 match, but tied it up after the No. 3 tandem of junior
Rachel Lee and sophomore
Hannah Yang claimed a 6-4 victory. It marked their second doubles victory in two matches this week. Then, the talented freshman team of
Jackie Nannery and
Hannah Harrod matched their effort with a 6-4 win to clinch the point and give Mason a 1-0 overall victory.
Mason extended the lead to 2-0 after a dominant performance from Nannery at No. 5. She won her first set 6-0 over Sandra Agguire, then claimed the second set 6-3 to take the victory.
Loyola (Md.) came back to win the No. 4 and No. 1 singles matches to tie it up at 2-2, but Yang got Mason to within a point of clinching after an excellent showing at No. 3.
She defeated Abby Decker 6-2 in set one, then cruised again in the second (6-3) to pick up the victory.
Loyola tied it up again after winning at No. 2, but freshman
Marium Raza came up in the clutch at No. 6 to send Mason home with the victory. She won her first set, 6-4, but then fell in the second by the same margin (6-4). In the third, she kept her focus and came out on top 6-4, as Mason took the win.
The Patriots return to action on Sunday in the team's senior match. Mason will host Monmouth at 2:30 p.m. at the Mason Tennis Complex.
